We recently returned from the Portugal River of Gold cruise. Our booking number was 6073463. Viking always does a good job. Food and Service great.
Portugal was beautiful. My only negative is the bus excursions. Almost everything we went to was a two hour plus round trip bus ride and it became a bit weary. I was also disappointed in the Viking lack of response to one of the excursions $149.00 each) in particular. Probably due to the price, we were a small group. Viking listed it as including a “sumptuous” lunch and tastings on a terrace. The lunch was awful and hardly sumptuous. They ran out of bread after the first 10 of the 20 people on the excursion passed through the buffet. Everything else was inedible and I couldn’t even get a piece of bread. The tastings on the terrace never happened.
As we were a small group of 20, the guide said we won’t need our ear pieces. He than proceeded to walk ahead of us and we could not hear him. We did the awful lunch next and the guide sat talking to the other table. We could not hear him once again. After we toured a citadel for 30 minutes we returned to the bus for an hour and a half ride back to the boat as it moved during our excursion.
During the ride back to the boat, we were sitting upfront so we could see the guide was playing with his cell phone instead of talking to the people on the bus. I reported this to the excursion manager as well as wrote it up on the Viking evaluation. The excursion manager said Viking needs to rewrite the description of the lunch and tastings as she understands how the description is misleading and she would speak to the guide. I heard nothing again from the excursion manager nor from Viking on the evaluation which I filled out prior to departure.
