About Swisscom AG
Swisscom is a leading provider of mobile, telephone and wireless service to residential and business customers in Switzerland. The company holds a market share of 67% for broadband, 60% for mobile, and 33% for TV telecommunication in the country. Swisscom also operates Fastweb in Italy and currently employs 19000 employees. About 51% of the company is owned by the Swiss government.
The Swiss Telegraph Network set up in 1852 eventually led to the penetration of telephones in the market by 1877. Both the postal and telephone service collaborated to form Postal Telegraph and Telephone (PTT) in 1920. PTT pioneered NATEL A mobile services and GSM-based NATEL D offerings in 1978, and 1993 respectively. When the telecommunication market in Switzerland was deregulated, PTT was spun-off and rebranded as Swisscom. Today, NATEL is one of the protected brands of the company in the country. Swisscom, after buying Fastweb, has diversified into other segments, including hospitality support and cloud services. Swisscom entered the digital TV market in 2007 and had registered 791,000 subscribers by the end of 2012. Swisscom went ahead with a fiber-optic expansion in the country from 2009. Swisscom recorded net revenue of CHF 8.2 billion in the first nine months of 2020.
Swisscom is known to be one of the best mobile networks and has the biggest fiber-optic networks in the country. The company is all set to switch off the 2G mobile technology after a strong 25 years presence. Swisscom believes that the move will help to create more room for reliable and stable services in the country. For customers who use 2G for an alarm system, emergency call system, or a heating system, Swisscom is offering support to help them switch to a new device. The company’s fiber optics is also growing at a considerable pace. The goal of the company is to reach all 2202 communities of Switzerland with high-speed internet and minimum bandwidth of 80Mbit/s in 2021. The nationwide fiber-optic expansion will be using Fibre to the street (FTTS) and Fibre to the Home (FTTH) technologies.Â
