Birth certificate is the most crucial document, especially when it comes to legal dealings with the Brazilian government. The birth certificate establishes the identity of the person to which it belongs and therefore the same is required for obtaining additional legal documents such as the CPF number, when purchasing/selling a property in Brazil or when getting married. Usually, most of the time, you have to present an attested copy of your birth certificate that has been properly translated by a certified translator in Brazil.

It should be known that like other publicly filed documents, there is no central database controlled by the Brazilian government, which can be easily searched. For instance, you can’t just type in the person’s name and thereby obtain their birth certificate. Thus, one of the ways to obtain the same would be to apply to the notary offices within the country.

When it comes to the documents required for obtaining the birth certificate, the requirements vary based on the marital status of the parents. For married parents, the documents required are a marriage certificate and the hospital birth registration certificate. For unmarried parents: birth certificates of both parents and the hospital birth registration certificate. Additionally, in both cases, two witnesses over the age of 21 should be present during the in-person application filing process. Furthermore, in the case of unmarried parents, only the father’s name will be showcased on the birth certificate of the child, after written authorisation is submitted to the issuing authority. Also, the notary offices in Brazil provide the first copy of the birth certificate free of cost. Any second or additional copies will be charged from the applicant.
