About The White House
Located in Washington DC, the White House is the official residence and office of the President of the United States of America. Commissioned by George Washington, the White House construction began in 1792, embodying Neoclassicism architectural features, and has went on to become an iconic historical landmark of Washington DC. A National Heritage Site, the White House is over 200 years old, and stands built using the cut stone bearing masonry.

In 1901, President Theodore Roosevelt coined the term “White House”, to the Presidential mansion, and the White House stands built on 18 acres (7.3 hectares) of park and garden grounds. The White House Complex has 4 zones, the Executive residence, the East & West Wing, the Executive office, the Blair House, and a guest residence, and the Visitors center.

Designed by Irish architect James Hoban, the White House has 6 levels, spanning a built-up space of 55,000 Square feet, with 132 rooms, and is a $600 million valued mansion. It took 8 years to near completion, and John Adams, is the first President to have lived at the White House, in 1800. The 6 levels of the Executive residence, covers the ground floor, the state floor, the second and third floor, and the two tier basement.

Explore the White House Visitors Centre, from 7:30 am – 4:00pm, and get to know about the various historical artifacts, photo archives, galleries, and experience the 14-minute movie about the White House, in an interactive session. The President’s Park is another highlight of the complex, the Northern trail, and the Southern Trail, and also stroll around the White House Garden Tour, and the Kitchen Garden.

At the White House, visitors can take self-guided tours from 7:30 am – 1:30 pm, and each group has 10 people, and spots are limited. The best time to visit White House, is between March-June, and September –October, and every season has a theme of décor at the White House, and the spring looks the best, with cherry blossoms.

It is mandatory that public tour requests for the White House, is done through your Member of Congress, and for international citizens, they have to contact their embassy for tour requests. The tours are mostly self-guided, and available from Tuesday to Saturday, and your requests have to be done, 3 months in advance to reserve spots.
