About Shanghai Metro
Shanghai Metro began operations in the year 1993. The rapid transit system serves commuters in Shanghai, China and is operated by the Shanghai Shentong Metro Group. Currently, the metro operates 14 lines, connecting about 364 stations. A single day, the metro transports over 10 million riders. This makes it the second busiest in the world after Beijing Subway.
The metro lines consist of Line 1 (Fujin Road – Xinzhuang), Line 2 (East Xujing – Pudong Intl Airport), Line 3 (North Jiangyang Rd – Shanghai South Railway Station), Line 4 (Yishan Road – Yishan Road), Line 5 (Xinzhuang – Minhang Development Zone), Line 6 (Gangcheng Road – Oriental Sports Center), Line 7 (Meilan Lake – Huamu Road), Line 8 (Shiguang Road – Shendu Highway), Line 9 (Songjiang South Railway Station – Middle Yanggao Road), Line 10 (Xinjiangwancheng – Hongqiao Railway Station – Hangzhong Road), Line 11 (North Jiading – Disney Resort), Line 12 (Qixin Road – Jinhai Road), Line 13 (Shibo Avenue – Jinyun Road) and Line 16 (Longyang Road – Dishui).
Shanghai Metro operates from 5am to until midnight. Tickets can be purchased at the counter or through vending machines at stations. You can find single fare tickets or 1 Day/3Day and Weekly Pass. There are special concession fares available for students and senior citizens. There is Shanghai public transport card for commuters who want to store multiple fares. Visit the Shanghai Metro website to check route map, calculate fares, get information on stations, among others. For more information or queries on payment, tickets, cancellation, parking, lost and found items, or others, reach the Shanghai Metro customer service via phone or email.
A compliment to a Shanghai Metro staff
It is my pleasure writing this compliment to a Shanghai Metro Staff who was on his duty at the International Cruise Terminal Station Line 12, which is the nearest station to the W Hotel where I was staying for the few days. When I approached him asking some questions about which stations should I get off for the few destinations that I planned to go, where (honestly) I did not expect to get a lot of information from my experiences asking/interacting with other metro staff (whether it was in Beijing, Shanghai or other cities), and other people in the city, but he is really exceptional. He showed his patience in listening to my several questions, and also patience in answering and providing more information to assist a foreigner like me within his capacity, and I am further impressed that he went on to double confirm some uncertain information (about which is the nearest station that I should get off as I was planning to visit Jade Buddha Temple), with other metro staff, he wanted to make sure that he did not mislead me with the inaccurate information. He is such a responsible person to ensure that I can visit to those places smoothly because I told him that I am from Singapore, and wanted to visit some places with the limited amount of time that I had during my business trip). To be frank, it could had been a very different experience if I were to ask some body else. He is approachable, friendly, responsible, helpful and showed his courtesy. I have been visiting China many times for business, and encountering him had absolutely given me a very good impression on the customer services in the metro station. I do not know his name at the beginning until the day when I was leaving to the airport (by taking subway to avoid the traffic), and it was so happened that I bumped into him again, and I asked his name, he is Lu Jie (??). And he further provided me some useful information about the shortest way to get to the airport, as I was running a little bit late that day, he impressed me again with his services and good will/intention to help. I took the opportunity to thank him, and said to him that I managed to visit all the places that I intended to, and complimented him, but he is humble. He said, it is his job to assist me or whoever who needs his assistance/guidance, and when he is on uniform, he represents the image of Shanghai metro company. I don’t think he would like to be “complimented”, but I strong feel that I should write this, because he has a very good attitude and he definitely well deserved it. Thank you.
