As a veteran, I have served my Country for years and I am deeply disappointed with Pulte Mortgage and the way I have been treated upon finalizing my mortgage contract. This is my first house and I have done everything asked of me. I have excellent credit, very little bills, put down $25,000 in Earnest money and was planning to put $50,000 down as a down payment. I was told I was an excellent candidate to purchase a home. Yet somehow I’m not eligible for the lowest interest rate unless I buy it down and increase my closing costs.
I was told several times by Ms. Kathy Eakin and Joy Webber that Pulte supports Veterans and would be fair in their terms. I was also encouraged to use Pulte Mortgage due to the discounts I would receive for my home. Of course I’m a first time home buyer, Veteran a woman and African American so I can’t say that I’m surprised. This has put a bad taste in my mouth and I wish I could withdraw my agreement to purchase this home. This seems like it goes against the Fair Housing Act, Truth in Lending Act, Federal Trade Commission Act and Consumer Financial Protection Board.
The beginning price of the home was $316,000. After my options, the cost went to approx. $326,000. I was given a closing date of December 18th and an interest rate of 5.25%. When I complained the rate was too high, I was then asked to contact other lenders and that they would try and match that rate. Therefore, that is what I did (despite the headache of doing it) and received multiple offers with 4.5% for a 30 year VA loan. Every lender said the same thing “Why were you quoted a 5.25% rate with your excellent credit history?” Frankly, so was I. However, Ms. Eakin contacted me yesterday and told me that in order to get the 4.5%, I would have to buy down the mortgage rate and increase my closing costs. She also said that if I used another lender I would have to pay those discounts I was originally given when I first signed the contract. So there was no consideration on Pulte’s part.
I am livid and feel that either I was going to have to accept a high interest rate or pay at least half for those discounts that were promised in order to go with Pulte mortgage from the beginning. Being an excellent candidate was never a factor in their consideration, which is now clear. They never had any intention of matching those rates I was asked to provide. Either way Pulte was going to make money off of me and could care less that I’m a veteran or that I deserve a competitive rate like I was told would happen. I feel betrayed and lied to and I don’t want to deal with dishonest and greedy people.
I just want a confirmation that I will receive my Earnest money and what the actual cost of the home will be upon using another lender. You have no idea how much pressure this puts me under, while I am still dealing with the loss of my father. Please respond back to me in writing so I can have a documentation trail. Again very disappointed about your greed and I will not stop until I find out if I was discriminated against.
