About MyFitnessPal
There are a plethora of health apps on both Android and iOS. While there are those that are failing to find relevance, there are few others that can sustain the interest. MyFitnessPal did it and did it right. This fitness platform is developed and maintained by Under Armour, a sports apparel powerhouse. The company shelled out $475 million to acquire the app, which was huge, to begin with, and rightly signaled that there was something to look out for. MyFitnessPal was first founded by Mike Lee in 2005, right when he and his fiance wanted to lose a few pounds before the wedding. Lee also roped in Albert, his brother, and started bootstrapping the start-up. John Doerr, who is a KPCB partner, joined the board too. MyFitnessPal was a quick hit with 40 million downloads in a short time. Currently, the platform hosts more than 80 million users continuously tracking their calorie intake from a list of five million food items. The app is available for both web and mobile device.
Tracking nutrients is one of the key features that made the app stand out in the first place. Users can either scan the barcode of the food item or manually punch in the name, to access the pre-existing database. In 2015, MyFitnessPal added the premium subscription pack for users to explore advanced features. The searchable database is continuously growing, and users can also add a new food or recipe. The apps are free for both iPhone and Android. The app also has a discussion forum, which allows inter-member communication. Users share their tips, make friends and learn from the experience of other users. MyFitnessPal also facilitates a personalised diet profile, that allows one to track their unique weight loss goals. If you are on the South Beach Diet, the Atkins Diet, or any other diet, MyFitnessPal has got your back.
Users can join the platform for free. During registration you will be asked to provide the weight, height, weight goal, the number of workouts you can undertake each week, and the time you are willing to spend on each workout. MyFitnessPal will suggest nutritional goals and fitness goals as well. The app also calculates the projected weight loss, depending upon the intensity of workout you agree upon. You can use the search to look up a specific food, brand or restaurant. When searching a food, the app will show the calorie count, nutrition information and serving size. The nutritional info includes carbs, fat, sugar, protein and sodium. Further it will show what activity it will take to burn the calories. Premium members get meal plans and recipes, personalised goals and option to log meals. You can start with a one month free trial before upgrading. The premium subscription is available on a monthly or yearly basis. You can cancel the subscription any time from your account. I cancelled my subscription last year but was still charged today even though myfitnesspal is marked inactive under my Gmail account. Angry former customer!!!
I downloaded MyFitnessPal to help me track my carb intake when I began a weight loss program. It is easy to use and I understood it. It was very helpful in helping me loose over 60lbs! Thank you. There are times when I wasn’t as diligent as I should have been with my tracking, but I knew it was there for me.
Imagine my surprise and displeasure when I tried to scan the barcode on a food item recently and wasn’t able to unless I enrolled in the Premium plan at a yearly/monthly cost. Then I would have access to this function. I don’t want to be told I have to enroll in a plan that has been free to me in the past.
I’ve searched for another carb counter app and there isn’t one that is as good as this one. I suppose you already know this.
I really like using MyFitnessPal. It would be really nice if you would put the scan barcode function back and not make anyone have to pay for it.
