The Egyptian National Police (ENP) has been in existence since 1878. The law enforcement agency has a staff of 500,000 and operates from its headquarters at Cairo. It is governed by the Ministry of Interior. The national police is responsible for maintaining law and order, preventing crime, besides processing passports, screening immigrants, operating prisons and controlling traffic.

The functions of the police are divided among four departments – Public Security (for immigration and passports), Special Police (manages prison administration, civil defense and traffic police), Personnel Affairs (police training) and Administration and Financial Affairs.
