About EDF Energy
EDF Energy is an integrated energy company headquartered in London. The company works in the domain of electricity generation and sale of electricity, natural gas to home customers as well as small, medium, and large size businesses. EDF Energy is functional throughout the United Kingdom and is currently handling 5.7 million customers. The company is owned by the French state-owned Électricité de France (EDF). Established in 2002, the entity was formed with the mergers and acquisitions of SEEBOARD, SWEB Energy Plc, London Electricity plc, a combined cycle gas turbine, and two coal-powered stations. EDF Energy also got control of UK’s nuclear generator, British Energy, in 2009. The acquisition has made EDF Energy one of the largest energy generators in the UK.Â
The company currently owns and operates a 2000 MW coal-fired power plant, known as West Burton Power Station. EDF Energy also owns 1311 MW CCGT station, which was started in 2011 and is located at West Burton. The company further operates three wind warms located in Northumberland, County Durham, and Teesside. After acquiring British Energy, EDF Energy now has a portfolio that includes eight nuclear power stations. Seven out of the eight are AGR stations, including Hinkley Point B, Dungeness B, Hartlepool, Hunterston B, Heysham 1, Torness, and Heysham 2. One PWR station, known as Sizewell B, takes the total capacity of all eight installed stations to 9000 MW. The company has made valuable contributions towards minimizing carbon emissions. The company is known to operate one of the biggest generators with zero carbon emissions. EDF Energy plans to enable investments in low carbon technologies worth £50 billion by 2035.
