About Bookshop
Bookshop.org is an online bookseller whose primary goal is to financially support independent bookstores. Launched as recently as 2020, Bookshop is a benefit corporation with headquarters at Brooklyn, New York. Founded by Andy Hunter, the book marketplace in 2020 sold books worth more than $50 million. The service was also recently launched in the UK, hoping to counter the rise and monopoly of Amazon. Currently, the UK has close to 150 independent bookshops selling through the platform. In the US, the number of bookshops that have signed up have crossed 900. On the website, a book lovers can search for a title or even use the ‘find a bookstore’ tool to locate a nearest outlet. The store locator allows you to search a bookstore by store name or zipcode.
On the homepage, you will find listed some of the bestsellers of the week and even titles that are newly launched. Additionally, there are those that are curated by the staff and others neatly organised under genres. When you search for a title, you can see the available format along with price. The highlights and overview give you a glimpse on the book. Product details include language, EAN/UPC code, dimensions, publisher and published date. You can either add to wishlist or proceed to order online. Currently, Bookshop has a regional store catering to US, UK and Spain. More regions will be added to the network of bookstores.
While orders are placed on Bookshop.org, the local distributor packs, ships and fulfills the order. Stores will not need to worry for space, managing inventory and fulfilling orders. Bookstores can set their store on Bookshop.org and start selling instantly. When a book is sold on the platform, the bookstore will earn 30% of the list price. Apparently, about 50% goes to the publisher and about 10% is taken for payment processing and fulfillment.
New users can register an account on the website to checkout quick, see order history and apply special coupon codes. Payment for books can be made through all major credit cards and PayPal. Once an order has been shipped, you will receive an email to track the delivery. The standard mail delivery can take 6-12 business days. You have the option to expedite by choosing priority shipping during checkout. Once an order has been placed, it cannot be modified or cancelled. However, you have a 14 day return policy. The book can be returned in its original condition for full refund. The packaged shipped back must include the return slip. Note that backorders and preorders are available on the marketplace.
If you are an author, you can register on the platform and become an affiliate. You will receive 10% when someone buys a book you share. You not only generate an income by promoting your book, but also support local and independent bookstores facing stiff competition. A storefront can be created with no extra cost. Payment for sales generated will be transferred to your bank account. The payouts happen only after it crosses a minimum threshold. For queries or complaints on new account, cancellation, refund, payment or others, reach the Bookshop customer service.
