About Bilibili
Bilibili is a Chinese video-sharing website operational in Mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Macau, and Southeast Asia. Developed by Xu Yi in 2010, the website had more than 55 million users (as of 2019). Interestingly the name Bilibili is inspired by the name of the protagonist Mikoto Misaka in the anime “A Certain Scientific Railgun”. The developers at Bilibili seem to be deeply inspired by the anime as many features on the website are named after the characters. Also known as the B Site, Bilibili allows users to share videos mainly revolving around animation, comics, and games. However, over time, the themes have broadened and other fields such as dancing, science and technology, entertainment, fashion, TV shows and movies, video game strategies, events from daily life, and advertisements have been added. The users can also submit, look at and or add commentary over the videos. The website also has a live streaming feature where streamers can interact with their audience. The company recently launched its first Bilibili video satellite. Bilibili services are free for the streamers, and they earn their revenue mainly from the advertisements placed on the website.
The website boasts a host of features useful for streamers. One of the popular features is what is termed as ‘bullet comments’. These subtitles or comments are displayed in real-time. Inspired by the Danmaku shooter game, the website allows its users to choose various fonts, styles, and movements. This makes the interactions more real as users feel like they are interacting with each other in real-time. The website also offers advanced subtitles which allow the users to draw shapes on the screen. The bullet comments can be posted by users who have registered their phone numbers with the website. It must be noted that for some users the bullet comments can appear distracting while watching the video. The website even allows the users to turn them off. While most of the content on the website is free, some videos can be watched only after a user purchases a membership. Membership is also needed if you wish to upload a video on the website or post a comment. Bilibili does not grant membership to just about anyone. They do strive to maintain the quality of the content posted on the website.
The platform has a feature rich app for iOS, Android, Windows, and Smart TVs. Bilibili recently launched a “big member” subscription under which users will be able to view videos in 1080p plus native resolution. The website calls it ‘titanium alloy picture quality’. Members avail many other benefits such as pink nicknames, discounts, etc. While most of the users (around 75%) are under the age of 24, Bilibili has joined the list of growing websites in Mainland China. For queries, feedback or partnership, you can approach the Bilibili support through email.
I don’t understand why I was able to watch anything I wanted on Bilibili for over a year then suddenly it tells me NONE of the shows are in my area, that is very strange. I thought it was because I didn’t register but when I did register, it still wouldn’t let me watch. That is not very nice.
