Brooklyn Museum is celebrated as one of the oldest and largest art museums in the United States that showcases artworks from around the globe. Located in New York City, the museum holds around 1.5 million artistic heritage works of world cultures, displayed in a 560,000 square feet civic institution. Founded in 1823, the earliest museum exhibits were of Egyptian and African art, and 17th -18th century paintings, sculptures, and decorative arts. In the latter developmental years, the Brooklyn Institute established a permanent gallery for fine arts and natural sciences, and re-named it as the Brooklyn Museum.
At the Brooklyn Museum, art collections from America, Africa, Islamic World, Pacific Islands, and Asia, are on display from times dating back to the 17th to the 21st century. In addition to this rich holding of artworks from around the world, the museum is home to some of the finest works of contemporary art, decorative art, classical and ancient eastern art, and photographical works as well. Visitors can also access the library and exhibition archives, image galleries, and other valuable heritage research papers at their Study Centre. The museum gallery is spread across 5 floors, beginning with the murals and sculpture garden, the admission desk, museum shop, and restrooms on the first floor. The museum libraries and archives are found on the second floor, and artworks from Egypt, Assyria, and Europe, alongside restrooms are found on the third floor. On the fourth floor, is the decorative arts galleries, contemporary art gallery, and the Sackler Centre, whereas on the fifth floor is the KAWS: What Party or the exhibition gallery, American Art and Study Centre, and the Arts Galleries of American Art. Â
There are fun-learn-explore activities for teens, parents, students, families, individuals, and corporate foundations to participate as apprentices, interns and groups. Digital resources, virtual events, year-round programs, art classes, camps, K-12 learning resources, online programs, are made available to the public through the museum’s educational program. Aside from visiting the Brooklyn Museum, visitors can also explore the surrounding locale within the Brooklyn Institute, such as the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, the Brooklyn Public Library, Prospect Park, and the Brooklyn’s Children’s Museum.Â
Visitors can opt between the two ticket types, the General Admission and the General Admission Plus. Members are entitled for free admission to both ticket types and enjoy members-only-hours, exclusive previews and viewing hours on select dates. General Admission tickets cost $16 for adults, $10 for seniors and $20 for students, and are free for ages 19 and below. General Admission Plus tickets cost $25 for adults, $16 for seniors, $13 for students, $10 for ages 4-12 and is free for 3 years and below. Public amenities at the Brooklyn Museum include parking, shopping, dining, restroom, wheel chairs, strollers, and free Wi-fi all around the galleries and grounds.Â
The museum hours are open between 11am-6pm from Wed-Sun, and remain closed on Mon-Tue, and closing hours are extended to 8pm on Fri-Sat. It is highly recommended to book tickets in advance prior to visiting the museum, and tickets are non-refundable and are for a specific timed slot. They are sold generally on a first-come, first served basis. Ticket is mandatory for everyone from ages 4 and above, and tickets can be exchanged once, with zero fees within 72 hours prior to the date and is based on availability of time slots, for the requested new date. Also, tickets are transferable for non-members, so unused tickets can be given to someone else, whilst members tickets are non-transferable, and can only be cancelled. Â
