When you sign up for a telecom service provider of your choice, you hardly think of cancelling your subscription. Everything works out smoothly, and you continue enjoying its flawless service for weeks or even years. But the real kicker comes when the company announces an abrupt increase in price or you experience a sudden decrease in service quality. That is when you start thinking about alternatives because you want better value for the money you are spending.

A similar notion can be applied to Telus, which is a world-renowned Canadian telecommunications service provider. Founded in 1908, it is currently the second-largest telecom organisation in Canada, after Rogers Canada. Telus’ long history spans more than a century, and over the years, the company has been successfully offering wireless, internet, television, home phone, and business communication services to its customers.

Operating a nationwide wireless network that covers more than 99 per cent of the Canadian population, Telus’ wireless network is touted for its speed and reliability. However, there have been multiple instances in the past where the company has been accused of unhelpful customer service, major billing errors and serious network issues.

As a customer, there is no denying that you always deserve better. And if that means severing your relationship with Telus, then you can do that as well. So, if you are looking to cancel your Telus service, then the below step-by-step guide is for you.

What is Telus’ Cancellation Terms?

According to Telus’ service terms and conditions, you can decide to cancel your service at any point during your contract. All you have to do is contact Telus customer care with the date from which you want your cancellation to be effective, and you will be good to go. However, do note that cancelling your service before the end of your contract period will attract cancellation charges up to the time the service is cancelled.

In addition to that, recurring charges, such as monthly plans and add-ons, will be charged only for the portion of the cancellation month you used the services. This is because Telus service runs on a month-to-month, advance payment basis. So, your cancellation will not be effective automatically on the date you wish to cancel but on the month in which your preferred date falls.

For instance, if you decide to cancel your service on the 15th of June, 2023, you will still be charged for the services used until June 15th, and your effective cancellation date will be the 30th of June 2023. However, the advance amount received for the service between the 15th and 30th of June will be refunded. Thus, all outstanding bills and charges must be cleared before you can close your Telus account.

Additionally, it should be known that Telus offers you the option to port to a different Canadian telecommunications service provider. So, ensure that you mention your desire for porting when registering your cancellation request.

Lastly, if you possess any rented or leased equipment that belongs to Telus (home phone, routers, modems, adapters, remotes, Ethernet cables, etc.), then the same should be shipped back to the company’s warehouse after your service cessation. To do that, Telus will send you a prepaid shipping label within three business days (after cancellation), and you have to pack the equipment into an appropriate box by attaching the shipping label. Also, do not forget to include a copy of your bill with your Billing Account Number.

What are the Steps to Cancel Your Telus Number?

Now that you have a good understanding of Telus’ cancellation policy, the time has finally arrived to register the cancellation request. Telus states that calling its customer care team is the ideal way to initiate a service cancellation. And to do that, follow the recommended steps below.

  1. Start the cancellation process by first calling the customer care department at the stated phone numbers: 1 866 558 2273 or *611 from a Telus mobile phone (for Telus Mobility), 1 888 811 2323 (for Telus Home Services), and 1 855 255 8828 (for Telus SmartHome Security). Phone lines are open from Monday to Sunday, between 9 AM and 7 PM.
  2. Navigate through the on-call options and proceed to speak to a customer care representative.
  3. Once a customer service executive connects to your call, provide your Telus account number and ask for cancellation. You will be required to first state your name, phone number, email ID, and residential address to pass the identification test.
  4. After successful identification, the customer care executive will ask you the reason for your cancellation. Proceed to state your grievances and difficulties you faced during your service period.
  5. In the next step, you have to state the preferred date on which you want your cancellation to be done.
  6. Once the customer care agent receives your preferred date, a cancellation request will be registered on your account. Additionally, you will also receive a confirmation message on your registered email address stating the outstanding amount that you have to pay (if any) and any leased equipment that you need to return (to avoid charges for unreturned rental equipment).
