KTM ETS (Electric Train Service) is an inter-city train service that is operated by Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad of Malaysia. It is among the fastest trains in Southeast Asia, designed to operate at a speed of 140 km/hr. However, they do not always operate at such high speeds given passenger inconvenience. Besides KTM ETS, you also have KTM Komuter and KTM Intercity to choose.

The KTM currently is offering three categories of services — a) Platinum service with a business class coach and limited stops; it has 9 return trips, b) Gold service with selected stops and with 6 return trips, c) Silver service with stops at every station and with 1 return trip.

The amenities could differ only slightly between the classes on the train. Some of the KTM features are comfortable, reclining, cushioned seats with good legroom and tray table; coat hanger; power outlets; luggage rack to place your bags; CCTV surveillance; LCD TV screens for entertainment; clean washrooms; cafeteria serving hot and tasty snacks and beverages; and dining options. Overall, a great deal!

Some important routes operated by the train operator include Gemas – KL Sentral – Padang Besar; KL Sentral – Ipoh; KL Sentral – Butterworth; and KL Sentral – Padang Besar.

What do you do if you have mistakenly left your luggage behind on the train? Who do you contact at KTM? Well, we give you three options to try. Try them all in combination, and you are sure to have your problem resolved in no time.

1. Visit the Lost Property Office

Every organization has its designated Lost Property Office where recovered lost objects are submitted. KTM has its own too. If you are lucky to remember having left behind things on the train after disembarking but before leaving the station, then please take help from the station master to guide you to the Lost and Found Center. It is unlikely that you will get your things immediately, but you will be required to submit a missing item complaint in writing/online. Once they log your complaint, ask for a reference number that you could use to track the status of your bag/item. Recovered items usually take a few days to reach their rightful owners.

The authorities will update you as and when they receive more information on the item once it is retrieved. The conductor/train operator combs all the compartments and seats at the end of the journey, and the left items are handed over to the Lost and Found section of the final destination station. If they find yours, and if the description matches, they will call you for verification and collection at an appointed hour and place. Remember to carry a valid ID to claim your things.

2. Dial the KTM Customer Service

Please call the KTM call center on 603-2267-1200 between 7 am and 10 pm, or email them at [email protected] to explain your problem. Let them know what you lost, where you think you lost it on the train, the train/coach/seat number, etc. Give them the date of loss, and a fuller description of the item you lost (brand, color, size, content), and furnish them with whatever additional information they would require from you on the matter.

You may even walk up to the KTM head office at the address given below to pursue the matter physically if you are not satisfied with the response from the call center executive, or the action claimed to be taken by the search team. Your anxiety would be obvious if you lost something precious like an electronic device, wallet, credit card, ID, or anything of equal value or more.

3. Use Social Media Platforms

Yes, social media can be your best bet when you need it most. It is a reliable platform to use to create an urgency around retrieving a lost item. You may post a message on their timelines highlighting the issue and requesting a quick revert, or you can opt to chat with their media agent on WhatsApp/Snapchat if a number or ID can be made available from the call center. Here are the Facebook and Twitter pages to bookmark.

Conclusion

The inventory of items people lose on the train can be quite long; many are recovered, but most are not. This will depend on what you lose, its value in money, where you lose it, and how long it took you to realize your loss. Many times, the items get stolen by fellow passengers before the conductor launches a search.
Hence, be prepared to stay sharp when you are carrying many items or valuables inside your bag. Label your bags well so that authorities can trace them back to you hassle-free without losing any time in case you miss them behind in the coach.
