About WestJet
WestJet was founded in the year 1996. The Canadian low-cost airline operates to over 70 destinations including US, Mexico and the Caribbean. WestJet currently is the second largest airline in Canada. The airline operates from its main hubs at Calgary International Airport and Toronto Pearson International Airport. WestJet employs over 8,000 people. By 2016, WestJet aims to be one of the five most successful international airlines in the world. Currently the airline operates about 420 flights everyday.
WestJet Destinations: WestJet destinations include Calgary, Chatlottetown, Edmonton, Hamilton, London, Montreal, Toronto, Windsor, Ottawa, Kelowna, Halifax, Deer Lake, Dallas Fort Worth, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Miami, Orlando, Palm Springs, Phoenix, San Francisco, Tampa Bay, Hawaii, Cabo San Lucas, Cancun, Mazatlan, Puerto Vallarta, Cayo Coco, Santa Clara, Varadero, La romana, Puerto Plata, Punta Cana, Samana, Bermuda, Bridgetown, Freeport, Nassau, St Lucia, St Martin, Turks and more.
I have been flying for years, domestic and international. Many of my flights were on Westjet. 5 years ago I would have said Westjet is the best. The flight attendants made you laugh, the service was excellent and the staff at the airports really tried to be helpful. Sad to say, Not Any More.
My last flight to Toronto was an example of what I am trying to say. The lady at the counter for check in was rude. My wife has Parkinsonโs and requires a wheelchair. We were told where to wait which was fine, but 45 minutes later we were still waiting. My wife went back to the counter to enquire about when the wheelchair might arrive and was told to sit down and wait. Terrible representation for the airline.
Second, you carry-on size is one of the smallest allowable for an overhead bag. The vast majority of carry-on bags are 22 inches long and fits in almost any jet overhead storage. People were having their carry on bags measured and if the bag was over 20 inches they had to check the bag and pay. Not nice, and certainly sends the wrong message. A message I received loud and clear. Westjet doesnโt care about my business or my companies.
Personally, I think you need to train you people to be more polite and recognize what a normal carry-on size is. Check the Internet, but you probably wonโt because you already know the answer to this.
I travelled from Halifax (1200) to Ottawa (1330) April 29, 2019 – first time on WestJet. Unfortunately, my suitcase with all my business materials, cosmetics, meds, footwear and business clothes was lost. (Please don’t get going that I shouldn’t put meds in checked bags – I thought I could trust WestJet baggage services).
I was allotted $100 for the first 48 hours. I’ll let you know – $100 gets you basic cosmetics, facial cream, shampoo/conditioner, deodorant, and iPhone charger. Absolutely NO CLOTHES. Did I mention, I was travelling for BUSINESS! I couldn’t wear yoga pants and a sweatshirt to meetings for 2 days. Totally inadequate WestJet!
Once my suitcase was found in Gander, NL, I was informed I’d have my bag the morning of April 30th – this didn’t happen. I was called later that day telling me that I was given wrong information and that my bag wouldn’t arrive in Cornwall (where I was for the week) until the morning of May 1st. Today, I’m informed this was also incorrect and that my bag wouldn’t get to Ottawa until at least 1400 today, then the contract delivery company would make arrangements to get it to Cornwall.
At this point, WestJet informs me I could incur up to $250 (includes the initial $100) since my bag would take between 2-5 days to get to my location. OMG – the extra $150 didn’t even cover the one business outfit (clothes/footwear/undies) I purchased to get me through my first 24 hours! How can WestJet think that $250 covers the necessities for their inadequate service.
It was suggested to me to contact the Central Baggage Service phone number to plead my case. I’ve called this number twice now and have been on hold for over 45 minutes each time. I’m sorry WestJet, I’m on a business trip and do not have the time to waste calling and being on hold for extended periods of time. Is there not an email option or a please call me directly option? Your poor service and handling of my baggage should not be my problem to fix. I’ve informed WestJet via nettracer that I’m unhappy with the situation and wished to speak with a manager – this should be adequate for someone with some authority to call me.
Can someone from Central Baggage Service with authority to increase allotted funds to cover BUSINESS CLOTHING contact me?!
On March 23, 2019, I left Abbotsford, B.C. to Calgary AB, Flight 2390, leaving Abbotsford 6:00 am to Calgary, to leave Calgary 9:30 am to Varadero 5:03 pm. I was travelling with my friend Paula Lazar (her boarding pass
attached). Arriving in Calgary, we were told the plane to take us to Varadero was grounded in Edmonton due to
intense fog, so we waited hour after hour, a total of 8 hrs. in Calgary airport, the next announcement then was
that the plane left Edmonton after 8 hrs., but the crew needed a rest for 2 hrs., making us wait now for 10hrs.
We were not given any compensation i.e. water bottles or perhaps a promise a free meal or drink, once we boarded. Having boarded, the captain apologized for inconvenience. I know no one can predict the weather, but it would have been nice to get a free meal or drink once we boarded – nothing, very upset. I would still like
to wait for Westjet to compensate me and my friend in some way, otherwise I will be very hesitant to fly with you again.
I am not sure why you think West Jet, or any other airline, should compensate you for something completely out of their control? Were you expecting them to fly the plane in unsafe weather putting you, your friend and hundreds of people at risk? When did we get to the point that we forget that stuff happens and it is nobody’s fault and we just have to manage?
I am probably not going to ever fly with West Jet again. I was told before boarding flight 2619 from Belize City to Toronto that there was a problem with the overhead bins being too full and would we please check our two carryon bags. When we arrived in Toronto we found that our luggage had been ransacked and that our tablet and cell phone had gone missing. When I finally talked to someone at 1-866-695-2247 I was given a big list of things to do before I could file a claim. This included producing receipts for the two items, and a police report, as well as accessing and completing a few pages of an online report, all to be done in four days. Can not seem to be able to even access the file number on their website, let alone get all the other stuff I was told I needed. I think West Jet makes the process so complicated just so a person will give up and not bother. The whole experience ruined my vacation and left me feeling that one should never check their luggage with any airline. Shame on you West Jet for not looking after your customers and for only being interested in the almighty dollar.
To whom it may concern,
I sent the following on September 22, 2018 in hopes of bending the ear of a compassionate Westjet employee:
To say I’m disappointed in the customer service of Westjet this past week is a major understatement. I am a loyal customer of Westjet, with a customer profile since 2010. I would pay more to fly Westjet because of the great service I’ve experienced. I had purchased 2 tickets for my sister and I to go from St. Johnโs, NL to Toronto to visit a friend for a mini vacay and to reconnect. I purchased the econo (lowest) fare, not really paying attention to the restrictions (my bad) but saw nothing coming up that would cause us not to go, and if it was something within our control, so be it, I would forfeit the fares and chalk it up to a learning experience. My sister has been a rock the past 4 years for her husband, standing by him through a kidney disease diagnosis, working 4 jobs to make ends meet, and I wanted to give her a break from lifes stress for a little while.
Little did we know a miracle was on it’s way. On Sept 19th, 2018 she received a call that there was a kidney available for her husband and they would need to travel to Halifax asap. Nothing else in this world mattered after this call. Both her and her husband were upset and disappointed about the timing coinsiding with our mini vacay but were beyond grateful for this gift of life. It was a whirlwind that day with hiccups and stress and the thought that her husband wouldnโt get his kidney because of mixups with the flight co-oridinator but the military stepped in and they ended up going to Halifax on a hercules. Our second miracle. I ended up cancelling my flight last minute, due to not knowing if they would go, and was told I would not receive a refund or credit. The gate agents changed the flight to Sept 20th, 2018, so if he went, I still had an option. I ended up going earlier the next day on another airline.
I called Westjet to cancel our Sept 22-25th trip to Toronto and I was advised at that time the fare was non-refundable, no changes or credits. I left it at that because it was what it was and nothing was gonna take away the pure joy I had for my sister and her husband.
A friend felt that if the circumstances were explained to Westjet then maybe they would make an exception, due to the nature of all that happened, and how Westjet pride themselves on customer service and loyalty, with a slogan of โOwners Careโ. He called on my behalf, so I could concentrate on being there for my sister and husband, and he received the most rudest, ignorant customer service response. He was beyond disgusted with the behavior of the agent he spoke with.
I am shocked and disappointed that Westjet will not help in the circumstances. We still need return tickets to go home once my brother in law is released from hospital. If Westjet would provide a travel credit, they would not lose a penny and would be heroes in this loyal customers eyes. I am turning to social media in hopes to right this wrong. Come on Westjet, you’ve proven yourself before, help continue the feeling of elation we’ve had when we received this miracle. :
It is now 2 weeks later and my brother in law is doing amazing. Weโve been so blessed and have been able to return to Newfoundland. And we traveled with Westjet. Loyalty to me means something. I am asking once again for Westjet to find it in their hearts to credit the travel that we werenโt able to take on September 22-25th, 2018 and consider the circumstances on September 19th, 2018 for that cancelled flight.
A loyal and really disappointed customer

It would be a good idea if Westjet, like some of the US airlines, partner with other international airlines to get and allocate more seats, hence offering better and more competitive prices.
United and Delta airlines do this wonderfully and has become much more competitive. Also, United and Delta has their main airports where they transfer customers onto their other or partnersโ flights so you hardly find empty seats.
Westjet should start together with Air Canada or other Canadian Airlines or even Mexico Aurlines. Please do not allow airlines from America to take you out.
Westjet’s app seems to have a problem with booking meals, it booked the first one for the trip home by mistake, next time made sure to book for the flight there, but it booked for the trip home too. The flight attendant said this was a frequent problem. Been sitting on hold with customer service for a refund. The flight attendant said he could not give the refund, but call customer service. 12 minutes on hold so far. Definitely quicker to book a flight than fix a problem like this. Well that was disappointing, cannot give a refund from Customer Service, gotta go to Westjet.com and submit a receipt for compensation, they did give a 50$ travel credit good for 12 months. Still, i would rather just have the cash back as promised.
Booked a flight to Toronto Last June and had to cancel last minute. Lawyer failed to inform us that we didn’the have all paperwork that was required. Cancelled trip, had cancellation insurance, was told would not be covered by insurance. Also could not get a refund on tickets. Told we had a West jet credit needs to be used in a year. Time is almost up for the credit and they want me to spend more money so I don’t lose the credit. I lost money on the cancellation insurance, and lost some money when I cancelled the trip. I just want the money refunded to my card, time wise and when our ability to take holidays is just one big head ache would be so much easier to just credit my card.
I am trying to contact Westjet from a Mexican phone to confirm traveling with a dog. I have my flights from Mexico to Toronto on Aeromexico but need to book a ticket from Toronto to Fredericton with my dog. NO NUMBER I call works from Mexico. Can you please provide me with the number I need to call?
Thank you
I will hesitate before I use Westjet again – this airline used to be known for customer service – think again! I booked a fight return from Kelowna to Toronto – here is the story!
– I booked my flight and booked my seats weeks in advance – when I arrived at the airport my seats had been changed with no explanation (there and back) ….I have very long legs and additionally I could hardly walk as I had a had a broken toe so I needed a aisle seat near the front.
– Luggage damage – I volunteered to have my carry on luggage stowed as the flight was full. When I arrived I found it had a handle broken off. When I went to inquire about replacement the smug attendant said “it is an old suitcase” we will give you a chit for $30.00 to be redeemed when you buy a new suitcase. The bag was only 2 years old and there was nothing wrong with it at the beginning of the trip! So now I have to do work – save the chit and buy a new suitcase and sent it in …!! This should have been a cash settlement.
– We sat in Toronto on the runway with the engine running for over 45 min. The plane became full of gas fumes! They were doing last min maintenance. I spoke to the attendant about the strong gas smell. She just shrugged and said “yes this happens all the time”. Why were we not removed from the plane when it was being serviced? Gasoline fumes are toxic! I felt very sick.
– I arrived at 12:00 midnight in Calgary and found my connecting flight was gone – so I had to stay overnight in Calgary. It was 36 below with the windchill. Westjet gave three of us a hotel room. Sounds great? Think again, we had to stand outside for over 30 min in the cold and wind at 36 below waiting for a shuttle at midnight. Why did they not send us in a taxi?
– Oh it gets better! We were not even given a breakfast allowance. I had to be back at the airport at 7:30am for the next flight they put me on.
– When I arrived in Kelowna – I missed my shuttle that I booked the previous night in Kelowna and had to wait over 2 hours in Kelowna for a shuttle to my destination as there was no room in a shuttle until then!
It did not once register once by the way I was treated that Westjet gave a d..m. Think again before using this airline. Westjet has gone the way of all big corporations – you are a number and way to make money ONLY>
Thanks for nothing West jet!
Arrived Pearson at 7:45am for a 9am flight to Vancouver. Quickly informed that due to “maintenance problems” the flight is delayed until 12 noon. At 11:35 they say flight is cancelled. Here is the kicker…Gate staff was overheard complaining amongst themselves that we all should have been informed at 9 that there was never going to be a plane at all!
A dozen fights took off that we could have been on! We missed our event in Vancouver because we were not going to be there on time and are out the cost of the tickets, baggage, and most importantly the fee for our performance. The deception by the staff and the “I don’t care” email reply by them is stunning in its condensation. My first and LAST time with this airline.
Hi, we are travelling from Frankfurt(Germany) to Calgary(on Condor Airlines) on July 20th and go further to Vancouver(on Westjet).
I need to know your agreement with Condor Airlines for baggage. And I cannot find any email address and also I have no booking number since I paid the whole flight(Frankfurt-Vancouver) to Condor. Please contact me!
My complain is based on principle and double standards on carry on baggage. I purchased a carry on luggage making sure it measured WJ required maximum size. I have travel with this piece of luggage on numerous trip which always past the carry on baggage measurements. Returning from my latest trip WJ 1487 yesterday my luggage did not pass the sizing device at the Las Vegas Airport which I was baffled because it had fit in the Edmonton sizing device in Edmonton when I left April 5th ? So when I arrived at YEG I made a point of going up to WJ departure to see if my luggage would fit in there sizing device! And it fitted! I do have pictures which I would be more than happy to share with you which I can’t attached to this text. I would also like an opportunity to further discuss this matter with a Westjet manager.
A compliment. Just a few words to compliment the departure staff at WestJet La Guardia for going above and beyond in getting us on an earlier flight back to Toronto on November 25, avoiding a long wait in the departures lounge. Give Betina a raise !!
Hello,
I just boarded a flight from Toronto to Calgary and once again the people helping at the kiosks need to be trained properly. I selected an earlier flight as I am a gold member with WJ (for no charge/great option) but the people at the kiosk told me 11A on flight 669 was exit row. I told them two times it wasn’t but they insisted. I selected this seat as I am 6’6″ tall and need the leg room. This isn’t exit row and once again been miss informed. Best part I paid to sit up front on my later flight which means nothing. Thanks WJ for misleading me again and making my experience unenjoyable.

We were vacationing in Cancun Mexico. Hand family emergency back home and talk to many differnt agents over the phone to try and change my reservations to return to Calgary directly was perpared to pay the extra fee’s. Was told by all agent this could be done at the Cancun airport. We arrive 3hrs befor flight #2311 leaving for Calgary March 25th. The agents at the desk told me that they could not make the changes at the desk I would need to call the 1-800 number they would do it over the phone. Called the agent after being on hold for ever the agent on the phone said they could not make the changes over the phone they would make the changes at the front desk. Got back to the front desk they assured me the changes can not be made at the front desk only the agent over the phone can make any changes due to an email that they received from head office. Could not make them understand that after talking to head office over the phone changes needed to be made by them at the front desk. They would not change reservations and we missed the flight to Calgary which had 8 open seats. Very Very upset with the way the Cancun airport Westjets agents would not help us with this family emergency.

When we boarded the plane, the agent from downstairs told us there was no more room for carryon baggage. I told her I had my movie camera and laptop in my bag. She said they would take it carefully from the brige and return it to me on the brige when I got off the plane. When we got off I asked for our carryon baggage and the men shrugged and said everything would arrive downstairs. Our bag was offloaded with all of the other huge bags. My laptop computer screen is smashed and the plasma is leaking out. We are here for 5 more weeks and I absolutely need a computer to communicate. Please help ASAP…the email I sent to WESTJET on the first day was returned to me and I am getting increasingly anxious and frustrated.
