On January 12, 2019. I was booked to fly back to the USA on SA 23, from HRE to JNB, then IAD to SMF. Upon checking in, I was made to wait for over 40 minutes, while the SA personnel on my check in desk was waiting to be allocated a seat number for me from a senior SA personnel on the next checking in desk. At that desk there was a lot of commotion and jostling. At first I did not realize why that was happening. Only to realize later that they were jostling for seats. At the finally analysis, I was informed that I have been offloaded, because the flight was over booked. As such my luggage was to be retrieved from the plane loading bay. Was told, I was to go on their next flight the following day. That was very devastating. I was to miss my business schedule in Washington Dc, and fail to report for work in time and get a two days tardy.
There was another airline to take off in the next our for the same destination, but the SA manager refused to assist, claimed that they had no business agreements with the airline. Refuse to give refund for the portion of the journey HRE to JNB. I Was forced to look for a good Samaritan to purchase the ticket for this other airline for me since my visa card was not acceptable. It was traumatic and hectic. In 25 minutes I managed to buy the ticket, locate my retrieved baggage from the SA 23, check in on the Fast jet and was the last passenger to board. With the grace of God, was in JNB in time to recheck in on my scheduled flight from JNB to IAD(Washington DC.
Unfortunately on rechecking in, the SA personnel on the check in desk , overlooked the aspect of my status in the system. The Off loaded at HRE status, remained unchanged. As such my two checked in luggage was not loaded on my flight SA 207, from JNB to IAD. My luggage was finally delivered at my residence three days later.
My effort to submit claim for refund and compensation for involuntary denied boarding, and was only offered alternative flight to be availed on the following day. has not been made easy for me.The SA website for such claims is very elusive. Their customer service personnel in the USA are not very helpful, unless I am missing something. So were their personnel at HRE. Their lips were only uttering a sorry, but their body language was telling something else. They were in celebration and in contentment for managing a full flight. Business wise it makes sense to them. They had no sympathy for our misery as we were already another addition for a possibly full flight the following day. Their business ethics do really leave a lot to be desired. It was my first travel with SA, up to now I feel dejected. I am very convinced that my seat was allocated to a stand by passenger. I was to get a connection flight, and under normal circumstances, I were to be given first preferences when a flight is overbooked.
Have been trying to submit a claim, may the SA customers services assist me. Travel insurance refused to compensate me and referred to the airline SA that denied me boarding.
SAA is the worlds worst airline to fly with. their services internationally is a lot to be desired. they stink. the people that work at the airline are terrible and now we understand why the airline is always in financial problems, get rid of incompetent staff.
