About Vietnam People’s Public Security
Vietnam People’s Public Security is the main law enforcement agency in Vietnam. Established in the year 1945, the force has two important branches – the Vietnam People’s Security and Vietnam People’s Force. Locally known as Cong an Nhan dan Viet Nam, the force is headed by the Ministry of Public Security and operates as part of Vietnam People’s Armed Forces. The various departments operating within the General Department of Police include Department of Criminal Police, Dept of High-tech Crime Investigation, Dept of Drug Crime Investigation, Department of Anti-Smuggling, Dept of Fugitive Pursuit, among others.

The various departments and offices of the People’s Public Security Forces work for the protection of national security and ensuring social order and safety of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. It implements policies and laws dealing with national security and keeping of social order. It further works to protect freedoms and rights of citizens, offer security to events and state officials, investigates crime, checks communal activities and brings criminals and anti-social elements to justice.

As for the two branches of PPS, the Vietnam People’s Security is responsible for public security and intelligence working. It also manages entry and exist visas and checks all foreign visitors entering the nation. The Vietnam People’s Police investigates political, traffic and corruption-related activities. It works on crime prevention, civil defence and transport security. Law enforcement is administered separately by provinces and municipalities, besides rural districts, urban districts, towns and provincial cities. Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Hai Phong, Da Nang and Can Tho has separate public security departments.
