About Royal Palace of Madrid
Built on a 9th century fortress site, the Royal Palace of Madrid also called, as the ‘jewel of Spain’ is the official residence of the Spanish monarchs, although the reigning Emperor Felipe VI and the royal family reside at the Palace of Zarzuela, in the suburbs of Madrid. The palace is open to the public as a historical museum, other than the days of the State ceremonies, and is notable for its lavish interiors, paintings, vintage furniture, and collections of the royal kings.

Constructed on a former Moorish fortress site, the palace built of granite and limestone, is the largest palatial structure in Europe, with a square internal layout, opening towards a central courtyard. The palace is famous for its imperial rooms, hall of columns, halberdiers room, royal bedchambers, reception rooms, banquet hall, and the porcelain rooms.

Designed by Italian architect Filippo Juvarra in the 19th century, the architectural style of the palace varies from Baroque to Neoclassicism, and unfolds on an area of 1,450,000 sq.ft, built over 17 years of construction and restoration work. With more than 3000 rooms, the chief attractions at the palace are the Main Staircase with 70 steps, the frescoed ceilings of the Throne Hall, the 18th century decorated rooms of the king, the guards and the chemist, the Royal Chapel, the Royal armory, and the painting gallery.

The exterior stone façade of the palace stands built of two levels, with ornate columns, Tuscan plasterworks, symmetrical proportions, with over 800 semi-circular windows, and balustrade works over the roof. For the interiors of the palace, Spanish marble is the primary material, with gilded stucco and mahogany woodwork for the doors, windows, staircases, and furniture. Besides the palace, the Sabatini Gardens are hugely popular with the visitors, mainly for its French style landscape, decked with fountains and figurines. The palace art gallery holds over 7000 paintings, and 800 figurine works done by various renowned artists of the medieval time.

Visitors can enter the palace through the Plaza de la Armeria, and is open all year round between 10:00am-6:00pm during October-March, and between 10:00am-8:00pm during April-September. The entrance tickets cost 11 Euros for adults, and 6 Euros for children aged 5-16 and for senior citizens, and is free for children below 5 years. Tickets can be purchased directly on the website. The palace is right at the western region of Madrid, and has an ease of access to metros, hotels, cafes and nearby attractions.
