About Muséum National d’Histoire Naturelle
An institutional centre of scientific research and learning, the Muséum National d’Histoire Naturelle in Paris is a collection of 12 distinct sites, established throughout France. Founded in 1793, the history of the Museum originates from Jardin des Plantes, a former royal botanical garden of King Louis XIII, of England. The Museum collections revolve around human science, life habitat, and earth, exploring their various dynamics and scientific discoveries, from the time of evolution.
The royal garden transformed into a public museum, under the steering guidance of 12 duly appointed evolutionary pioneers, anatomists and naturalists such as Buffon, Jean-Baptiste, Georges- Louis and many others, in the 19th century. With the foundation laid in 1793, the National Museum of Natural History, flourished and is presently classed, as a grand establishment of higher education in fundamental and applied sciences, by the French Public Administration.
With seven research centers and three diffusion centers in Paris, the Museum actively conducts scientific research, and aims to impart knowledge to the public. The Museum has all-together four sites in Paris, including the biggest of all the sites, Jardin des Plantes with numerous branches. The diffusion centers in Paris include the Jardin des Plantes, along with the Parc Zoologique de Paris and the Musée de l’Homme.
The Museum gallery of Paleontology and Comparative Anatomy, is hugely popular with the public, and revolves around exploring the Paleozoic Era, and the Mesozoic Era, tracing back over 540 million years of evolution. Other galleries of visual interest include the Jardin des Plantes, with 6 greenhouses and more than 20,000 species of plants, the Grande Galerie de l’Évolution, a fun and interactive learning museum for kids, and the Galerie des Enfants, a science museum for children under 12.
Open every day from 10am-6pm, the Museum is busiest during the weekends, and best visited on Mondays and Fridays. The Museum remains closed on Tuesdays, 1 May and 25 Dec, and visitors can book online or avail fast-track tickets from the office desk. The best timings to visit the zoo are before 11am in the morning, or after 4pm in the evenings.
Admission to the Jardin des Plantes is free for all, and the tickets cost €7 for The Galerie de Paléontologie, and €9 for The Galerie des Enfants. The Parc Zoology tickets cost €22 for adults and are €14 for children aged 3-11, and costs €10 for the Musée de l’Homme and €13 for the Menagerie.
