About Mudra Bank
Mudra Bank is an Indian financial service institution established in 2015. Launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the public sector organisation was set up to provide funding to non-corporate small business enterprises. Mudra is short for Micro Units Development and Refinance Agency. According to the website, the primary mission of Mudra is to back the Non–Corporate Small Business Sector (NCSB) by lending to micro/small business entities engaged in manufacturing, trading and services activities. It is important to note that Mudra does not directly lend to individuals. The loans are given by commercial banks, cooperative banks, RRBs, small finance banks and MFIs as part of the Pradhan Mantri MUDRA Yojana (PMMY) scheme.
The loans are categorised into – Shishu (loans up to Rs 50,000), Kishore (loans from Rs 50,000 to up to Rs 5 lakh) and Tarun (loans above Rs 5 lakh and up to Rs 10 lakh). For 2017-18, the government has sanctioned Rs 35550.97 crore to be disbursed. If you are a borrower, you can now file an application online. To be eligible for a Mudra loan, you must either be a small manufacturing unit, service sector unit, shopkeeper, fruit/vegetable vendor, truck operator, repair shop owner, machine operator, small industry owner, artisan, among others, in rural and urban areas.
