About Metropolitan Museum of Art
The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City is reputedly one of the largest museums in the world, with over 2 million exquisite art exhibits on display. Housed in three locations in New York City, the largest museum is on Manhattan’s Upper East Side.
With exhibits from around the world, ranging from paintings, to sculptures, musical instruments, weapons, costumes, books and recently a digital collection of downloadable art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art or the Met, as it is fondly referred to by patrons and fans alike, is a feast for art connoisseurs the world over.
The Met has 17 curatorial departments, each headed by dedicated curators and art experts. The most visited department is the one housing the Impressionist and post-impressionist paintings of masters such as Cezanne, Monet, Gauguin and Van Gogh. With not a single art work in its kitty at the time of its inauguration in 1870, the Metropolitan Museum of Art now has exhibits ranging over 5000 years from Asia, Africa, Europe and the Americas.
Since there is so much to see and it is not possible to cover all three museums in one day, tickets are valid for three days at any of the locations. They can be purchased at the museum or online. For out state visitors, tickets cost $25 for adults, $17 for senior citizens and $12 for students. Online purchase of tickets entitles you to use it any time during the year. For residents of New York State, and for students of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut, there is a pay- what -you -wish facility which they can avail of on producing their ID cards. This allows them entry to exhibitions and all three museums, but on the same day.
The Metropolitan Museum of Art believes in making its facility and exhibits accessible to all art lovers, irrespective of their ability to move around, so the whole museum is wheelchair accessible.
