About Medi-Cal
medi-cal logoMedi-Cal is California’s free health insurance program for low-income people. The federal program offers coverage to families with children, seniors, persons with disabilities, orphaned children, among other groups. The program is jointly managed by California Department of Health Care Services (DHCS) and the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). Over 12 million residents in California are already enrolled in Medi-Cal.

Medi-Cal benefits include outpatient services, emergency services, hospitalization, maternity and newborn care, mental health and substance use disorder services, prescription drugs, laboratory services, preventive and wellness services and pediatric services. To enroll for Medi-Cal you can visit the local county office or fill up your application online through CoveredCA.

Counties where Medi-Cal offices are found include Alameda, Alpine, Amador, Colusa, Contra Costa, Del Norte, El Dorado, Fresno, Glenn, Humboldt, Imperial, Inyo, Los Angeles, Madera, Marin, Modoc, Mono, Napa, Orange, Placer, Riverside, Sacramento, San Diego, San Joaquin, San Mateo, San Barbara, Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, Shasta, Sierra, Siskiyou, Solano, Sonoma, Sutter, Tehama, Trinity, Yolo and Yuba.

Even if your family isn’t below the stipulated poverty level, you can get Medi-Cal if you are 65 or older, blind, disabled, under 21, pregnant or on refugee status for a limited time. That means you can still be enrolled with CalFresh, SSI/SSP, CalWorks, Adoption Assistance Program or Refugee Assistance. Once accepted, you will get a benefits identification card (BIC) in the mail. You can apply any time of the year. If you have a complaint about how your application was handled, you can request a Fair Hearing.

If you are not aware, dental services are also presently covered under the Medi-Cal program. There is also the popular Medi-Cal Managed Care that provides high quality health care services through managed care delivery systems. There are currently some 8.8 million Medi-Cal beneficiaries in all 58 California counties.

If you are required to pay a monthly premium for your Medi-Cal, you can make the payment through personal check, money order, at any Western Union Convenience Pay location or using credit/debit card online. For more information or queries on new application, local offices, Denti-Cal, payment, or other queries, reach the Medi-Cal customer service via phone or email.
