About Jim Corbett National Park
Asia’s first national park, and one of the oldest forest reserves of India, the Jim Corbett National Park is a renowned eco-tourism destination, in the hilly district of Nainital of Uttarakhand. A prime focal attraction for wildlife and nature enthusiasts, the Corbett National Park attracts 70,000 visitors, every season of the year. The main aim of the park is to protect wildlife, and encourage ecotourism for tourists to explore the wildlife habitat.
Originally known as the Hailey National Park, since establishment in 1936, the name changed to Corbett National Park, after the legendary hunter and wildlife naturalist, Jim Corbett. Spread over an area of 520 km2, the park has an eco-diverse sub-Himalayan landscape belt, of rivers, hills, grass highlands, meadows, water bodies, and swamp pits. Enlisted as a protected forest reserve, the park protects three endangered species (Bengal Tiger, Asian Elephant, One-Horned Rhinoceros) under the WWF organization, with the forest headquarters in Nainital. In 1974, the launch of Project Tiger, a wildlife conservation project, proved successful in protecting the endangered Bengal Tiger from extinction.
In totality, over 75% of the national park is a dense forest zone, and 10% covers grasslands, with over 488 varied species of plants, 110 species of trees, 50 species of animals, 580 species of migratory birds, and 50 species of reptiles. The forest reserve is dense with deciduous and pine trees, and interesting wildlife such as sambar deer, the sloth, the Himalayan black bear, the Indian Pangolins, the Indian crocodiles, and others.
Tourists flock to the Corbett National Park, in the winter season from November-January, and in the summer season from April to June, and can opt between the three safari rides of Jeep, Elephant, and the Canter, to explore the national park, in the easiest and comfortable way. Walking safaris and trekking is permissible in the park, accompanied by a guide, and the park allows overnight stays for tourists at the forest lodge. Besides wildlife and landscape, other tourist attractions at the park include the Kalagarh Dam, the Dhikala forest reserve and the Corbett WaterFalls.
Open on all days of the week, the park operates between 6:30am- 6:00pm and the morning safari rides from 8:00am- 11:00pm, and the evening safari rides from 3:00pm- 6:00pm. The entry fee for Indians is from INR 500- INR 3600, and for foreigners from INR 1500- INR 7000.
