About Bureau of Immigration
The Bureau of Immigration (BOI) is the statutory regime governing immigration in India. It was formed in the year 1971 and is headed by the Commissioner of Immigration, assisted by the local Foreigners Regional Registration Offices (FRROs). The BOI has 87 immigration check posts, few of them also being governed by the state governments. As for FRROs, there are currently 12 – the list includes Bangalore, Chennai, Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Trivandrum, Lucknow, Ahmedabad, Amritsar, Kochi and Calicut.

Immigration checks are conducted at the time of arrival and departure and includes both Indians and foreigners. The passports are stamped at arrival as well as departure. Information collected include name, date of birth, passport number, date of boarding/arrival and local address. Indians having the Emigration Check Required (ECR) category of passports require POE clearance. Foreign nationals will have to show their visa on arrival. There are different categories of visa with varying number for entries and duration of stay.

For foreigners, immigration check will include the inspection of passport, visa and the Disembarkation Card. Those with PIO (Person of Indian Origin) cards can gain entry into if valid card is presented. If one plans to stay for more than 180 days, the Bureau of Immigration requires that the individual register with the FRRO/FRO. Pakistani nationals must register within 24 hours, while others can do within 14 days of arrival. No fee is charged for registration, but a fee might be taken for late registration.

Note that India offers tourist visa on arrival for foreign nationals from a number of countries. It includes citizens of Australia, Brazil, Finland, Germany, Indonesia, Israel, Japan, Myanmar, New Zealand, Palestine, Philippines, Korea, Russia, Thailand, UAE, US and Vietnam. The visa is valid for 30 days (single entry). The facility is available at select airports across metros. Application for visa on arrival can be made online, with the visa fee paid using credit or debit card. Online submission is also available for select FRROs/FROs. The forms available include registration, visa extension, change of address, change of passport, loss of passport, etc.

Those on medical visa, student visa, employment visa, business visa, conference visa, missionary visa, journalist visa and research visa can extend their visa by submitting the relevant documents online or in person. Details of same are available on the website. Note that Form S is mandatory for foreign nationals admitted in Indian educational institutions.
