About Hoover Dam
Located in the Southeast of Las Vegas, the Hoover Dam is a must-see attraction for tourists, and is perfect for a day trip, just about 30 miles from the tourist city. Admired for its engineering design, the Hoover Dam is a man made wonder, and is the largest producer of hydroelectric power in the United States. Meticulously designed and constructed, the architectural style is visually appealing, amidst the backdrop of the mountainous terrains, with breath-taking views of Lake Mead.

Hoover Dam, originally known as the ‘Boulder Dam’ stands built in the Black Canyon, nestled between the States of Nevada and Arizona, in the United States. Named after President Herbert Hoover in 1947, the construction of the dam spanned over 6 years, and generates energy for 1.3 million people, for the past 80 years. Entirely built of concrete, the dam is actively functional as a power generator, flood control, and as a water reservoir.

Construction of the dam, started in 1931 and is structurally a concrete gravity-arch dam, measuring 221m in height, and 379m in length, and has a capacity holding of 2,480,000 cubic metres. The primary source of irrigation for the Hoover Dam is the Colorado River, and additionally, the Lake Mead on the other side of the dam adds to the recreation zone for the tourists. Visited by over 1 million people every year, the Hoover Dam joins the list, of the seven industrial marvels of the world.

A 30-minute ride from Las Vegas, the dam is best to explore in the morning, and is En-route to the famous Grand Canyon. The view from the Hoover Dam Bypass Bridge is insanely spectacular, offering scenic panoramic shots, and ranked the second highest bridge in the United States. The best season to visit the Hoover Dam is around January- February, as the weather is pleasant, and is less crowded, and for the river rafting, it is ideal to visit in winter, to avoid the scorching heat.

Guided tours are available for the power plant, from 9am-4pm, and cost $15.00 for an adult, and $12.00 for senior citizens, and children aged 16 and under. The visitors centre is open from 9am-4pm, and tickets cost $10.00 for an adult, and are free for children under 3 years. Parking is available for $10.00, and is open from 8am-5pm. Open all round the year, the Hoover Dam remains closed during Thanksgiving and Christmas day.
