Managed by Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA), the metro has 6 lines connecting to more than 90 stations. The lines consist of Red, Blue, Orange, Yellow, Green and Silver. Washington Metro operates some 1,126 rail cars, serving more than 700,000 travellers each day.

Also branded as Metrorail, the transit even serves areas in Maryland and Virginia. The busiest stations include Union Station, Vienna, Shady Grove, West Falls Church, Pentagon, New Carrollton, Huntington, Silver Spring, Franconia-Springfield, Pentagon City, Metro Center, Farragut North, Farragut West, McPherson Square, Foggy Bottom, Rosslyn, Smithsonian and Gallery Place. Commuters can use the metro to conveniently reach the Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, as well as the Dulles International Airport.

As for fares, you have 1-Day Unlimited Trip Pass, 7-Day Metrorail Fast Pass, 28-Day Metrorail Fast Pass, Peak SmarTrip Fares and Off-PeakSmarTrip Fares. Use the SmarTrip cards for Metrobus to Metrobus transfers with unlimited connections. It can also be used on MTA and local bus systems. The card can be easily credited with tickets directly on the website. Tickets can be purchased at manned stations, through vending machines and at select retail stores. Metro operates parking facilities at 42 Metrorail stations. The hourly and daily parking fees vary by station. Parking is free at Metro-operated lots on weekends.
