Being a small nation on the Arabian Peninsula, Qatar has gone through massive transformation over the course of the last few decades. The country’s rapid development is greatly reflected in its extensive and ever-evolving road network, boasting well-maintained multi-lane highways connecting major cities like Doha, Al Khor, and Mesaieed.

The introduction of multi-lane highways prioritizes high speeds and efficient travel, of which the standout example is the ‘Orbital Highway’, which stretches up to 195 kilometers and acts as a major channel that connects north-south traffic. And due to the growing traffic demands, Qatar has implemented the ‘Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS)’, which uses sensors, cameras, and real-time data for optimizing traffic signals while also providing drivers with valuable information. Additionally, with continued investment in traffic infrastructure and technologies, the ultimate aim is to create a safer and more efficient transportation network for visitors and residents alike.

Having said that, if you own a Qatarian driving license that is due for renewal, then our in-depth guide can help you learn the process you need to follow for the same, so that your daily commutes do not get hindered.

Steps to Follow For Renewal

The Qatarian Government, courtesy of the Ministry of Interior, has recently introduced the ‘Metrash2’ mobile app, allowing the country’s residents as well as foreign nationals to apply for a host of online services, such as driving licenses (including renewals), traffic certificates, removing vehicle mortgages, obtaining vehicle exit permits, and much more.

To start the renewal process for your driving license issued in Qatar, follow the recommended steps listed below.

  1. Start by first downloading the ‘Mestrash2’ app on your smartphone, from either the Google Play Store on your Android device or the Apple App Store on your Apple device.
  2. Once downloaded, launch the app and first select your preferred language.
  3. After that, proceed to login to your account by entering your Qatar ID number and its expiration date, following which the app will send an automated message to its servers for verification.
  4. Once verification is complete, you will receive two activation codes, which you will have to enter into the app and then set a PIN code for security purposes. Only after that can you start using the app.
  5. After setting up your Metrash2 app, from the home screen, click on the ‘Services’ tab and then select the ‘Traffic’ option.
  6. In the subsequent step, select ‘License Service’ and then ‘Renew Driving License’.
  7. You will then be required to enter your Qatar ID or QID number again, and once done, click on ‘Next’.
  8. The system will update itself and then show you the total amount of fees that you have to pay for the renewal. Additionally, you also need to select the delivery method for your driving license—either through Qatar Post (Qpost) or by visiting the traffic department in person. Keep in mind that if you are choosing Qatar Post, you will need to enter your delivery address and pay extra for the delivery charges.
  9. Once done, complete the transaction by paying the requisite fees online using your debit or credit card.
  10. Finally, wait for your renewed driving license to be delivered to your doorstep, or simply pick it up from your nearby traffic department office.

For any additional queries or assistance, you can get in touch with the Qatar traffic department customer care via phone at 2342000 or 2344722, or via email at [email protected] or [email protected].

Some Useful Information

The General Directorate of Traffic in Qatar, along with its Licensing Affairs Department, primarily offers three types of driving licenses for its citizens and expatriates, namely: light vehicles, heavy vehicles, and motorcycles. It should be known that the validity of driving licenses for each of the aforementioned three vehicle categories is 10 years for Qataris and 5 years for expatriates.

The minimum age for obtaining a driving license in Qatar is 18 years, and the applicant must be a resident of Qatar to be eligible for a driving license. Additionally, the applicant must be in proper mental and physical health at the time of carrying out the driving tests and should have a clean record when it comes to criminal and traffic offenses.

Setting aside the eligibility criteria, to initiate the process of obtaining a driving license, you will need to provide your Qatar ID (also known as a residence permit) or valid passport (for foreign nationals), along with passport-sized photographs and an eye-test certificate. And if your driving license is sponsored by your employer, then a NOC (No Objection Certificate) must be provided. However, for driving license renewals, you will need to only present your Qatar ID, since all the other data will be automatically present in the system.

After applying for a driving license, applicants need to enroll in a driving school – either for a half or a full course. Half-courses are designed for those who already have driving experience, while full-courses are for beginners. Additionally, parking tests will also be carried out, and if the applicants pass all the tests, a driving license will be issued.
