OnePlus has always thrived to deliver specifications of a flagship phone in midrange prices. However, since the last few of its releases in recent years, like the OnePlus 8 and the OnePlus 8T series, the company seems to target the flagship market directly. With the increasing rates of flagship smartphones, the top of the line OnePlus 9 Pro still seems to be a great deal, considering the feature rich specification sheet and the highly advertised camera setup. The company has also gone one step ahead with the long term partnership with Hasselblad, which is the camera brand that captured the lunar landings in the Apollo Missions by NASA with their medium format cameras.

About and Features

The device is available in two variants with an 8GB, 128GB RAM to storage combination and a 12GB to 256GB combination making it an effective choice with a decent price difference. Both the storage options boast the latest LPDDR5 and UFS 3.1 storage which are the latest hardware specifications available today. It has Qualcomm Snapdragon’s best SoC available in the market as well, the SD 888 which is built on a 5 nm base with fifth generation modem.

Other hardware features include fast charging capabilities of 65 Watts with a charging brick available inside the box (yes, it is a highlight too), LTPO Organic LED display that has a refresh rate of 120 Hz. This 6.7 inch display also has HDR 10 certification which ensures you consume media in its best form. The smartphone has also taken care of small details like the haptic feedback and speaker setup as well. Lastly, the design of the phones is decent yet meets the 2021 standards perfectly with a seamless punch hole design, and when equipped with their oxygen OS 11 with latest Android version 11, the experience is flawless.

The camera needed a special mention since it has been tuned by Hasselblad. The rear camera setup houses new sensors of a 48 MP Sony IMX789 which has amazing dynamic range and stability, a 50 MP ultra-wide Sony IMX766 and a telephoto 8 MP camera that is used for zooming up to 3.3 X optical and 30x digital. The front facing camera is still the same from last year, Sony IMX 471 and it is right above average.

Common Complaints and Issues

Display: The smartphone has one of the best displays in the market available right now but a few users have reported a tint issue in their units. This tint covers part of the screen and makes the screen greenish for a while. However, this problem is reported by very less people and the issue can be fixed free of cost by One Plus service centres.

Heating: Users also report of heating issues in the phone.  This typically happens when the phone is used for photography and intense gaming. The device significantly heats up which is a major concern for people who would be spending for a flagship device. This complaint has mostly been received from gamers and those who use the camera a lot, but a little heating issue is pretty normal while playing a high end game in 2021. The best solution to this is to make sure the RAM management is relaxed while you are into playing a game and use the charging brick/cable that has been provided by the company only.

Design: The design seems to be on the heavier side for a lot of users, although it is highly subjective. The manufacturers did not over do the design or under did it, it has been kept subtle but then again, design is highly subjective.

Camera: The cameras being the spotlight of the features list but that is only for the back camera. The front facing camera is of last years. It has a very underwhelming performance. Hopefully, it may be fixed after software updates for this.
