The Indian birth certificate is termed as an essential document that is officially required (or in some cases mandatory) for obtaining various kinds of benefits or services provided by the Indian Government. This piece of document showcases all the important characteristics of an Indian citizen, such as gender, name, parents’ name, date and place of birth. Hence, the primary purpose of using one’s birth certificate in India is to prove the age of the respective person to whom the birth certificate belongs.

To obtain an Indian birth certificate, the following set of supporting documents will be required: proof of letter that has been issued by the hospital or nursing home (in case the birth has taken place at the hospital/nursing home) or declaration by the parent(s) (in case the birth has taken place at the parents’ residence), the birth certificate(s) of the parent(s), the identity proof of the parent(s) and the self-attested copy for proof of address of any one of the involved parent(s). The document for proof of address can be the parent’s Indian voter ID card, utility/electricity bill, Indian ration card, passport, bank account statement or Indian Aadhaar card.

It should be known that in rural India, the birth certificate will be issued by the Gram Panchayat office. Alternatively, in urban India, the concerned municipal corporation will be responsible for issuing the birth certificate. Additionally, all birth certificates must be applied within 21 days of the child’s birth. In case the registration isn’t done within the aforementioned 21 days, then the same should be carried out under delayed registration provisions along with sufficient late fees.

Facilities for reporting delayed events aren’t available online currently and the required party has to visit the office of the concerned registrar for completing the process.
