About Wankhede Stadium
Established in the year 1974, Wankhede Stadium is a cricket ground in Mumbai owned and managed by the Mumbai Cricket Association. The stadium, situated between Marine Lines and Churchgate, is named after former BCCI president Seshrao Krishnarao Wankhede.
The ground hosted its first Test in the year 1975. The first ODI was held in 1987 between India and Sri Lanka. Wankhede Stadium has a seating capacity of 33,000 and comes with floodlights and other modern facilities.
To some more facts, it was in this stadium the 2011 World Cup final between India and Sri Lanka was held. The highest score (224) in the stadium was that of Vinod Kambli against England in 1992. The stadium also witnessed the last match of Sachin Tendulkar’s international career. The ground in fact has stands named after icons such as Vijay Merchant, Sunil Gavaskar and Sachin Tendulkar. Garware Pavilion End and Tata End are the two end names. The stadium was renovated in 2011 to host the World Cup matches.
