About US Social Security Administration
Social Security Administration (SSA) is a civilian agency of the US Government. Formed in the year 1935, the SSA is responsible for administering the country’s social insurance programme. The federal agency is currently headquartered at Woodlawn, Maryland and employs close to 65,000. It has 10 regional offices and more than 1,300 field offices. You can locate an office nearest to your address on the link here.
Being the largest federal program, the Social Security Administration pays benefits to over 60 million people including retirees, children, widows, and widowers. It also runs Supplemental Security Income, a program for low-income and disabled individuals. Social Security has two trust funds — Old-Age and Survivors Insurance (OASI) and Disability Insurance (DI).
Residents and non-residents across US will need a Social Security Number (SSN) to get a job. The SSN is a 9-digit number that is used to track worker’s earnings and keep a record of social security benefits received by them. The Federal and State legislations govern the use of SSN. To obtain a SSN, one needs to provide proof of age, identity, and US citizenship. If you need to apply for a replacement card, you can now do same online by using my Social Security account.
Need to apply for retirement benefits. Social Security operates an online retirement application that you can fill in a jiff. You can apply online for retirement benefits if you are at least 61 years old, not currently receiving any benefits on your own Social Security record and have not applied for retirement benefits. You can also apply if you already have a Medicare. Note that applications can also be submitted by visiting your local Social Security office.
Besides retirement benefits, you have the disability plans under which comes the Disability and Supplemental Security Income (SSI). The SSI program pays benefits to disabled adults and children who have limited income and resources and who have also paid Social Security taxes. There are tools available online to estimate your retirement, disability and survivors benefits.
