The United States Marine Corps is a branch of the United States armed forces. One of the most elite armed forces in the world, United States Marines is known for its amphibious assault force. They also serve in humanitarian and other emergency response situations. An important department of the U.S. Department of the Navy, the Marine Corps has been in existence since 1775 and has its headquarters at Arlington County, Virginia. The Marines are trained and equipped to respond to threats across US and around the world. As of 2017, it had more than 180,000 active personnel and close to 39,000 reserve personnel. The Marines are also nicknamed “Leathernecks” and “Jarheads”. The commissioned officers’ ranks include Second Lieutenant, First Lieutenant, Captain, Major, Lieutenant Colonel, Colonel, Brigadier General, Major General, Lieutenant General and General.
