About Union Station
Union Station in Washington DC is a major railway station and popular landmark that is over 100 years old and visited by over 32 million people each year. Opened in the year 1907, Union Station is one of the largest railway stations in the world and was declared a historical landmark in 1964. The station is currently served by the Amtrak, Maryland Rail Commuter Service (MRCS), Virginia Railway Express (VRE) and Washington Metro Red lines. The government-owned Amtrak in fact has its headquarters here. The trains together serve Washington, Boston, New York and other cities.
The station, not located far from the US Capitol and US Supreme Court, has undergone several renovations throughout the years. The design of the station is inspired by Arch of Constantine and the Baths of Diocletian. It was designed by famed American architect Daniel H Burnham. The station’s 96-foot high Main Hall has 36 figures of Roman legionnaires. There are also many carved figured located around the main entrance. Apparently, the total cost for building Union Station stands at $125 million
For tourists visiting Washington DC, Union Station is on top of the tour itinerary. The station in fact has an indoor mall, fine dining restaurants and includes many shops and kiosks. Additionally, concerts, exhibitions and special events are held at the station. The station boasts of a multilayered parking garage with more than 2,500 parking spaces. There are also separate parking spaces for charter buses and recreational vehicles. Amenities at Union Station include baggage storage, ATMs, payphones, vending machines, accessible restrooms, WiFi, accessible waiting room and wheelchair facility.
As for the operating hours, the retail stores open Monday to Saturday, from 10am to 9pm. On Sunday, it is open from 12pm to 6pm. The food court is open on most days from 6am to 9pm. The Directory Map on the website has details on the stores, restaurants, ticket offices and much more.
