About Topkapi Palace
Topkapi Palace is a popular tourist destination in Turkey. Built by sultan Mehmet II around 1478, the palace is located on a small hill in Istanbul and served as a residence for several Ottoman sultans. Now a museum, the Topkapi Palace is locally known as Topkapi Sarayi and Seraglio. One of the largest and oldest in the world, the palace has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1985. Said to have housed a university as well as a mosque, the palace supposedly has been home to more than 4,000 individuals.
The architectural divisions inside the museum include Babi Humayun, Babussalam, I.Avlu, Hagia Irene, Second Court, Imperial council, Tower of Justice, Outer Treasury, Third Court, Arz Odasi, Library of Ahmet III, Sultan Mehmed II Pavilion, Treasury Ward, Agalar Mosque, PRivy Chamber, Kilerli Kogusu, Fourth Court, Circumcision Room, Revan Kiosk, Iftaree Pavilion, Harem, Court of Eunuchs, Eunuchs’ Quarters, Throne Room, Golden Room, Courty of the Concubines, Gate of Carriages and Sentry Post. The museum houses arms, weapons, Chinese porcelain collections, copper kitchen utensils, European porcelains, portraits of sultans and paintings, silverware, sultans’ clothing, Islamic calligraphic manuscripts, Muhammed’s cloak and sword, among others.
The museum is open everyday except Tuesdays. The Museum, Harem and Hagia Irene can be visited between 9am and 5pm. Ticket counters close at 4pm. Tickets can also be purchased online using major credit cards. There is also the Museum Pass that gives admission to several museums across the country. Ticket for one person costs 40 TL. Harem and Hagia Irene tickets cost separate. Turkish children and teenagers below 18 years old and foreign children under 12 years of age can enter for free.
