About St. Peter’s Basilica
St. Peter’s Basilica is a popular tourist destination in Rome, Italy. It is one of the most famous churches falling under the Catholic tradition, with history recording it as burial place of one of Jesus’ twelve disciples, Apostle Peter. St. Peter’s Basilica is said to have been built in the fourth century by Emperor Constantine. And in 1626, the church was reconsecrated.
Boasting a capacity of 60,000 people, St Peter’s Basilica saw the involvement of famed architects, including Donato Bramante, Raphael, Antonio da Sangallo the Younger, Michelangelo, Jacopo Barozzi da Vignola and Gian Lorenzo Bernini. Michelangelo is said to have designed the main dome of the Basilica
St. Peter’s Basilica is open from 7am to 7pm on all days. The Vatican Museum is open from 10am to 2pm. Times vary on weekends and on special occasions. One of the two largest churches in the world, St. Peter’s Basilica has more than 100 tombs, including the tombs of 91 popes. And the largest collection of ancient art is also housed at the church. Visit the Vatican Museum to receive guided tours of Vatican Gardens, Pontifical Villas, among other top spots. Tickets for the museum can be purchased online using major credit cards. Tickets can also be purchased from the Ticket Office, open Monday to Saturday, from 9am to 4pm. Several exhibitions are held each month that offer a glimpse into art and history. For more information or queries on tickets, timings, parking, lost and found items, or others, reach the St. Peter’s Basilica customer service.

Good afternoon,
I will be visiting the Vatican museums on Monday 7th May and to ensure my wife and I have enough time to enjoy the experience we would like to visit St Peter’s Basilica on Sunday 6th May.
I was planning on arriving first thing in the morning when St Peter’s opens to avoid long queues and also climbing the Cupola early in the morning. However, I think there will be a Papal Celebration on Sunday 6th May and so my plans might not be achievable. I have found mixed information from a variety of websites and I would really appreciate your help giving me some clarity.
If I wanted to visit St Peter’s Basilica and climb the Cupola whilst there, what times would this be possible on Sunday 6th May (Preferably early morning)?
I very much look forward to hearing back from you. Many thanks in advance for your time.
