About Russia Police
Public protection and security in Russia is provided by the Police of Russia, locally called the Politsiya. Formed in the year 2011, the police force traces its origins to 1918 when it was established as the Main Police. Later in 1917, when the police of the Russian empire ceased to exist, the government formed the Militsiya which operated till the police reform in 2011. The law enforcement agency today is governed by the Ministry of Internal Affairs (Ministerstvo vnutrennikh del – MVD). Currently, it has an active personnel of more than 905,000. As for the ranks, the General of the Police of the Russian Federation heads the agency and under him comes the Police Colonel General, Police Lieutenant General, Police Major General, Police Colonel, Police Lieutenant Colonel, Police Major, Captain and Lieutenant. Junior staff includes the Praporshchik, Starshina, Sergeant and Private.

The Politsiya is responsible for maintaining law and order and public security. The tasks are divided between departments like the Investigation Department, Dept of Civil Service and Personnel, Dept of IT and Dept of Logistical and Medical Support. General administrations include that of Traffic Safety, Administration for Protection of Public Order, Administration for Combating Extremism, Administration for Internal Security, Administration for Transport, Criminal Investigation and Drug Control.

The law enforcement agency administers and coordinates the overall operation through federal, regional, and local levels.
