About Robben Island Museum
Robben Island is an important historical and cultural site located on Table Bay, a natural bay overlooking Cape Town, South Africa. It is one of the country’s most important breeding place for sea birds. There are reportedly more than 9,000 breeding pairs of African Penguins here. Though that is a major attraction for visitors here, there are other highlights that draws thousands each month. Robben Island is home to one of the oldest prisons in South Africa and was extensively used by Dutch settlers in the 17th century. In 1999, UNESCO designated the island as a World Heritage Site.

The island’s prison housed the former president of South Africa, Nelson Mandela, for close to 18 years. There is a museum at the island that was established by the Department of Arts and Culture in 1997. Regular tours are operated for visitors. Tickets for tours can be purchased online. The tour includes trip across Table Bay, a visit to the Maximum Security Prison, and a bus tour of the island. The ferry runs thrice each day, the first schedule at 9am, then at 11am and last at 1pm. The ferries depart from the Nelson Mandela Gateway at the V&A Waterfront. Ferry tickets vary for adults and children.
