About Red Fort
Red Fort is a popular tourist attraction in Delhi, India. Also called Lal Qila, the Red Fort is of historical and cultural significance. Built by Emperor Shah Jahan in 1639, the fort served as the residence of many emperors in the Mughal dynasty. It was declared a World Heritage Site in 2007. The walled citadel with red sandstone walls are managed by the Archaeological Survey of India.
The Prime Minister of India addresses the country from the Red Fort every year January 26. The Red Fort has two main gates – the Delhi gate and the Lahore gate. Spread over 256 acres, the Red Fort is octagonal in shape. It houses the famous Rang Mahal (meaning Palace of Colors). Only the emperor and the prices could enter the Mahal. Red Fort was taken over by the British before Independence. Even the last emperor Bahadur Shah Zafar was tried by the Britih on charges of treason.
The Red Fort is open from 9.30 AM to 4.30 PM. Tickets need to be purchased for entry. The prices are different for locals and foreign visitors. For more information or queries on tickets, timings, events, parking, or others, reach the Red Fort support.
