Abouย Paro Taktsang
Paro Taktsang is a Buddhist monastery and popular tourist destination located on the upper Paro valley, Bhutan. Also known as Taktsang Palphug Monastery and Tigerโs Nest, the monastery stands on a cliff 3,000 ft above Paro valley. The sacred place is said to have been the spot where the ‘second Buddha’, a guru, is said to have first landed in Bhutan in the 8th century. Built by Gyalse Tenzin Rabgye, a fire in the main building brought the entire complex down in 1998. It was rebuilt to original form in 2005. For the record, the Paro Taktsang is said to have been established in the year 1692.
Accessing the monastery requires one to pass through arduous mountainous paths. There are total three paths taking one to the monastery. On the outside, the monastery appears to be a white complex with golden roofs. It encompasses 4 temples. Each area of the monastery also has breathtaking views from the balcony. There is a prayer wheel located in the courtyard of the temple, rotated by monks every morning at 4am.ย Foreign visitors need to have valid visa to access the monastery. The path to Paro Taktsang takes around 2 to 3 hours by foot. You can also climb the cliff on a horseback.
