About National Museum of Ireland
Established in 1890, the National Museum of Ireland, Dublin is one of the finest museums, to focus on the Irish art and history of Celtic traditions. The state-run museum has three sites in Dublin city, and another one at County Mayo. Each of the four museum sites display the rich and historic Irish culture, with fascinating collectibles and impressive architectural structures.

The three museum sites in Dublin City are the Archaeology museum at Kildare Street, the Decorative Arts & History at Collins Barracks, and Natural History at Merrion Street. In 2001, the fourth museum, Country Life was open to the public at Turlough Park, Co. Mayo.

Designed by Thomas Newenham Deane, the Archaeology Museum was the first to open in 1890, at the Kildare Street. The building on its own is grandeur, with its impressive contemporary architectural features, and displays exhibits from prehistoric Ireland. The entrance dome of the building, known as the rotunda is at a towering height of 20 metres, and is built inspired by the impressive structure of pantheon of Rome. Entrancing row of cast-iron colonnades, with ornate cherubs and splendid mosaic floors, adds to the fine brilliance of the building interiors. The building is Victorian styled and is a notable landmark in Dublin city.

The museum site at Collins Barracks was open to public in 1997, for Decorative Arts & History. Built on an 18-acre site, the museum has an administrative office, gift center, and a café for visitors. Originally, a military base, the barracks designed by Thomas Burgh, is now a museum displaying furniture, porcelain wares, clocks, traditional costumes, and artifacts from Irish military troops.

At Merrion Street, the Natural Life museum, displays collections of animal specimens, from around the globe, and the Country Life museum at Turlough Park, displays exhibits from the early 19th – mid 20th century with a focus on rustic Ireland.

Visitors take about 2 hours, to tour the four National Museum sites located in Dublin and Co.Mayo. Easily accessible by all major modes of transport, the four museum sites are the busiest in summer, and best to visit during the weekdays, to avoid large crowds. All four-museum sites remain closed on 24-25 Dec and Good Friday. The museum opens daily on Sunday/Monday at 1pm and, Tuesday to Saturday from 10am. It closes every day at 5pm. Admission is free to all the four museum sites, and the museum shops and cafes are open during visiting hours.

You can visit the website to follow the major events across the four sites. There are also resources connected to archaeology, decorative arts and history. The Collections section showcases the ancient Irish artifacts, folklife collections and history collections on display.
