About NASA
NASA is a space agency created in the year 1958 and is owned and funded by the US government. NASA is short for National Aeronautics and Space Administration. The space agency was opened in response to Soviet Union’s first satellite called Sputnik. Till date is has been responsible for more than 1,000 unmanned missions into space to explore the solar system. One of NASA’s best mission has been the Apollo project which put man on moon for the first time in 1969.

The space shuttle Enterprise was the first shuttle built for the reusable spacecraft fleet. Apparently there has been more than 120 successful flights as part of the shuttle program. Two major disasters to mention would be that of Challenger in 1986 and Columbia in 2003. Headquartered at Washington DC, NASA also has centers located in California, Texas, Louisiana, Alabama, Florida, Virginia, Maryland, New York and Ohio. The space centers are named Ames Research Center, Armstrong Flight Research Center, Glenn Research Center, Goddard Space Flight Center, Johnson Space Center, Kennedy Space Center, Langley Research Center, Marshall Space Flight Center, Plum Brook Station and Stennis Space Center. NASA is also part of the the International Space Station, the world’s largest international programme in science and technology.

For photographing the surface of the earth from space, NASA launched the Landsat satellites in 1972. The NASA website has a vast number of resources for those looking for images, videos and content on topics of Earth, Technology, Solar System and Aeronautics. There is also a segment called Missions that give you an overview of the ongoing and completed launches and landings. Visit the Galleries section for high quality images and videos. There is NASA TV for some interesting programming on NASA missions and research centers. All these and much more can also be accessed on NASA’s official apps for smartphones and tablets.
