About Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM)
The Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) is responsible for supervising and regulating the activities of the municipality in Mumbai. Also popular as Brihanmumbai Mahanagarpalika, the municipal corporation is primarily responsible for providing the basic civic amenities to the residents and implementing new policies for development of the municipality. Established in 1888 and operating formerly as Bombay Municipal Corporation, the MCGM is headed by the Municipal Commissioner. The Mayor however is the most powerful person in the civic body.

The city is divided into administrative sections, mainly seven zones with each having close to five wards. Under Zone 1, comes parts of Marine Drive, Ballard Estate, Colaba, AP Marg, IR Road, RB Marg, Abdul Rehman Street, Netaji Subhash Road, Maulana Shaukatali Road, Grant Road, lndrajit Road, Breach Candy Byculla, Sukhalaji Street, Dattaram Lad Marg, among others. In Zone 2, you have Parel, Matunga, parts of Thane Creek, Mankikar Marg, NM Joshi Marg and Worli. Under Zone 3, there is Santacruz Vile Parle, Mahim Dharavi, Bandra, Andheri East, Andheri West, Vile Parle East, among others. Malad, Goregaon, Oshiwara, Gorai, Kulvem Village, Kandivali and Dahisar come under Zone 4. Under Zone 5 and Zone 6, you have Kurla, Chandivali, Sakinaka, Govandi, Link Road, Ghatkopar, Bhandup, and Mulund. You can see the entire list according to the zone on the official website.

A number of civic services related to sewage, water and road are managed by the MCGM. The various divisions you will find include the Health Department, License Department, Building and Factory, Garden and Trees, Water Works, Market Department, and Sewage Operation. Before the age of Internet, one had to visit the Municipal Corporation’s office and go through the hassles of waiting at queues and meeting executives. But now one can just visit the website and navigate through the services. There is a form for those who want to submit new business application. Additionally, read the circulars and list of relevant documents that need to be furnished through the portals. You can also download forms that must be submitted at office.

Further, you can go online to submit application for registration of Shops & Establishment, renew health license, apply for trade license, duplicate license or restoration license/permit. Other online services include application for factory permit, and registration of birth/death and marriage. Users will need to create an ID and login to complete birth/death reporting form. The application must then be handed out to the Registrar at the given address along with documents. Users can then track status of application online.

Need to pay property tax? Simply input the property number and see outstanding bills. You can pay your tax through credit/debit card and net banking. Smartphone addicts can download the MCGM app to make payment, renew license, pay water bill and get information.
