Think of animation studios in Japan, and one name instantaneously springs to mind – Madhouse. Madhouse Inc. is one of the oldest and most legendary animation studios in Japan. It was founded in 1972 and has its headquarters in Nakano City, Tokyo, Japan. Madhouse Inc., has to its credit the prestige of being one of the longest running anime studios in Japan. Having an impressive record of producing the greatest number of popular anime series, Madhouse Inc., is a subsidiary of Sony Pictures and its related group companies.
Madhouse Inc., has produced and created many popular and well-known shows, films and Original Video Animations (OVAs) such as Ninja Scroll, Tokyo Godfathers, Death Note, One Punch Man and many others, thus making it a globally known name.
Among the earliest television shows that made Madhouse popular were Aim for the Ace, Gamba no Bouken, Jetter Mars, Nobody’s Boy: Remi and Treasure Island- all released in the 1970s and 1980s. The 21st century ushered in hit shows such as Boogiepop Phantom, Hidamari no Ki, Sakura Wars, Aquarian Age: Sign for Evolution and Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi, among many other popular shows. Madhouse Inc., made its movie debut with early anime works such as Barefoot Gen, Lensman – anime movies based on sci-fi, action films such as Wicked City, Demon City Shinjuku and Ninja Scroll and female oriented films such as the Cardcaptor Sakura series. The company also produced some ambitious collaborations such as Metropolis, the Unico based movies, Perfect Blue, Millennium Actress, Tokyo Godfathers and Paprika.
Other popular films produced by Madhouse Inc., include hits such as The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Nasu: Summer in Andalusia, Forest of Piano, Summer Wars, Yona Yona Penguin, Wolf Children and The Tibetan Dog.
