About Indian Army
The Indian Army is an important part of the Indian Armed Forces and was first formed in 1776 by the East India Company at Kolkata. Currently, the third biggest army in the world, the Indian Army is headed by the Chief of the Army Staff. It also is the largest troop contributor for UN peacekeeping missions. With the motto “Service Before Self”, Indian Army defends its borders, promotes peace and fights back internal and external threats. The Indian Army apparently boasts of more than 1.2 million active personnel.
The various commands of the army besides the headquarters at New Delhi, include the Central Command in Lucknow, Eastern Command in Kolkata, Northern Command in Udhampur, Southern Command at Pune, South Western Command at Jaipur, Western Command at Chandigarh, and Army Training Command at Shimla. The main military academies are located at Dehradun (Indian Military Academy) and Chennai (Officers Training Academy). As for the officer ranks within the army, you have Field Marshal,General, Lieutenant General, Major General, Brigadier Colonel, Lieutenant Colonel, Major, Captain and Lieutenant.
