About Immigration Department
The Immigration Department of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) is the chief agency responsible for immigration and visas in Hong Kong. Formed in the year 1961, the Immigration Department employs more than 8,000 and operates from its headquarters at Gloucester Road, Wan Chai. Before the department came into existence, immigration related matters were governed by the Hong Kong Police Force.
The agency is responsible for exercising immigration control, facilitating visit of travellers, preventing immigration-related crimes, issuing identity cards and travel documents and providing civil registration services for births, deaths and marriages. It examines passengers arriving and departing by land, sea and air. The Immigration Department controls all entries into and exits from Hong Kong. With the introduction of e-Channels, entry and exit procedures have been much streamlined. Travellers can arrive in or depart from Hong Kong through 12 main immigration control points. The Control Point locations are available on the website. Additionally, you can also visit any of the Immigration Department offices situated in East Kowloon, West Kowloon, Sha Tin, Fo Tan and Yuen Long for information.
Nationals of about 170 countries and territories can visit Hong Kong without visa for a period ranging from 7 days to 180 days. Indian nationals must apply for pre-arrival registration online before they can visit or transit the HKSAR visa-free. The visit or transit must however not exceed 14 days. Fee for ordinary or transit visa can be read on the website.
Business travellers can apply for the Travel Pass, a document with 32 pages which is valid for 3 years and multiple entry for a stay of 2 months each trip. Application for Travel Pass can be done by post or online. Business travellers can also enquire on the APEC Business Travel Card, a travel document issued to citizens of APEC participating economies. The card is valid for 5 years.
As for identity cards, there is the Hong Kong Identity Card, The Smart Identity Card and Consular Corps Identity Card. The application and forms for the ID cards are available on the website. Forms include application for extension, application for Hong Kong Smart Identity Card, application for Travel Documents, Birth Registration, HKSAR Passport, Pre-arrival Registration for Indian/Taiwan nationals, among others.
