About Hellenic Police
Hellenic Police is the main law enforcement agency serving citizens in Greece. Formed in 1984, the national police service is responsible to the Ministry of the Interior and Administrative Reconstruction. Headquartered at Athens, Hellenic Police has a staff of 55,000. It works round the clock for the safety and security of citizens, investigates crime, prevents terrorist activities and implements public and state security policies. The regions of jurisdiction include East Macedonia and Thrace, Central Macedonia, West Macedonia, Thessaly, Epirus, North Aegean, Central Greece, Peloponnese, West Greece, Ionian Islands, South Aegean and Crete.
The Lieutenant General heads the force in the country. Other ranks include Major General, Major General, Brigadier, Colonel, Lieutenant Colonel, Major, Captain, Lieutenant, Second Lieutenant, Warrant Officer, Chief Sergeant, Investigations Sergeant, Sergeant, Investigations Warden, Warden and Constable. Training and education for its officers’ corps is provided by the Athens-based Hellenic Police Academy.
