About Gurudwara Bangla Sahib
Revered and visited by millions of Sikhs all over the world, the Gurudwara Bangla Sahib is one of the most prominent shrines, located in the heart of Delhi. Gilded with gold leaves, the dome of the Gurudwara is an eye-captivating spectacle from the farthest ends of the Connaught marketplace, and is a prime landmark and tourist spots in Delhi. Dedicated to the eighth Sikh Guru, the 17th century shrine is also famous for the large water body known as ‘Sarovar’ within the complex.
Formerly the Gurudwara was a bungalow, known as the Jaisinghpura Palace, and belonged to Raja Jai Singh I, a Rajput ruler of the mewar dynasty, and hence named “Bangla Sahib”. Built by Sardar Bhagel Singh in 1783, the Gurudwara holds significant importance to Guru Har Kishan, as he dedicated his life to volunteer and serve the sick and needy people. The Gurudwara, completely built of white marble, stands elevated with a central golden dome having a tall flagpole, known as the Nishan Sahib, and has numerous arched openings on the façade.
The magnificent edifice is a fine example of Indo-Saracenic architecture, and the entire complex includes the main prayer hall, the water body (sarovar), the community kitchen (langar), a guest hall (serai), shoe holding place (jora ghar), and cloak room( gathri ghar). An artificial water body, lies at the middle of the complex, known as the sarovar.
Other places to see inside the Gurudwara complex include, the community kitchen, the Baghel multimedia museum, an art gallery, a library, a hospital and school. Air-conditioned rooms known as Yatri Niwas and, car-parking facility with restrooms, are available for guests at the Gurudwara.
Entry is free for all sections of the society, and is open all round the year, seven days a week, and serves free vegetarian meals for over 10,000 people, from the langar every day between 9am-3pm. The dress code involves, keeping the head covered with scarves, and shoes removed at the entrance, and photography is non-permissible. You can contact the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee for hall booking, sangat services, museum access and donation. The website has details on same.
