About Federal Police – Bundespolizei
Policing of borders, railways and airports in Germany is handled by the Federal Police, also known as Bundespolizei. The law enforcement agency was formed in 2005 and currently employs close to 43,000 personnel, both civilians and full time police officers. Bundespolizei is responsible to the Federal Ministry of the Interior. The agency is headquartered at Potsdam, Brandenburg. It also maintains regional headquarters at Bad Bramstedt, Hanover, Sankt Augustin, Koblenz, Stuttgart, Munich, Pirna and Berlin. Bundespolizei also works closely with Bundeskriminalamt (the Federal Criminal Investigation Office), Landeskriminalamt (forensic and research office), and Bundesnachrichtendienst (the federal intelligence service)

Law and order is maintained through the wide network of 67 stations spread across the country. Also popular as BPOL, Bundespolizei’s primary missions include securing the borders, protecting public buildings, responding to terror activities and checking crime. Note that German states are independently responsible for managing the police forces. In each state, you will find a separate police force, also known as Landespolizei.

The Bundespolizei supports the federal states and authorities in fighting crime, conducting investigations and preventing terror activities. Bundespolizei protects the borders by developing border surveillance systems, verifying the travel documents of those crossing the border, and checking goods that enter the country. If you want to download forms or get information on passports, visas, border rules or others, you can visit the website.
