About Election Commission of India
The Election Commission of India (ECI) is a federal authority responsible for administering free and fair elections in India. The autonomous constitutional body was established in 1950 and is headed by the Chief Election Commissioner. The Chief Commissioner and other Election Commissioners are appointed by the President. The President also appoints regional commissioners and determines the tenure and conditions of service. The ECI website states they have tenure of six years, or up to the age of 65 years. The commission has its headquarters at New Delhi and employees around 300. The task force of a general election consists of nearly 5 million polling personnel and civil police forces.
The functions of Election Commission include: to determine the territorial division of the constituencies, revise electoral rolls and register new eligible voters, notify schedules of elections, supervise the machinery of elections through the country, recognise political parties, determine the code of conduct, report MPs and MLAs caught in corrupt practices, and cancel polls in case of irregularities.
The results of past general elections and bye-elections are posted on the website for public to read. You can also see the dates of upcoming elections and get an overview of the set up of the Commission, among other information. There are tools available for knowing your polling station or searching name in voters list. You need to simply input your name, age, district and assembly constituency name to get details of voter information. You can also search by voter ID. For those looking for polling stations, you can filter results by state, district and station.
If you are yet to register yourself for the electoral roll, you can do same by submitting an application at nearest office. The Forms section on the website has a number of applications related to registration. Additionally, you can get links to websites of states to get educated about election processes, polling processes or use of EVM.
The National Voters’ Service Portal is where you need to head if you are looking to apply for voter ID card or to track application status. You can also request for deletion in electoral roll and make correction of entries. The online application for Voter ID has mandatory particulars like name, data of birth and permanent address. You will need to upload your photograph, besides age and address proof. You can submit the application in English or Hindi. For more information or queries on registering voter ID, application status, corrections, polling stations, or others, reach the Election Commission of India support.
