About Church of the Savior on Blood
The Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood is one of the most visited tourist attractions in St Petersburg, Russia. The church was built in 1883 in memory of emperor Alexander II who was killed by a local revolutionary group in an attempt to overthrow czarist aristocracy. Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood was envisioned by Alexander II’s son Alexander III. Around 1930, the church was closed for visitation. There were restoration works being undertaken for close to 30 years. It opened again in 1997.

Interiors of the church was designed by celebrated artists Alfred Alexandrovich Parland, Mikhail Vrubel, Mikhail Nesterov and Viktor Vasnetsov. Showing a combination of Neoclassical and Baroque styles, the church boasts over 7500 sqm of mosaics, thus giving it the name the Museum of Mosaics. The mosaics depict several biblical scenes and figures. The church’s outlook is said to resemble the popular St Basil’s Cathedral in Moscow.

Also popular as the Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ, the church is located very close to the Griboedov Canal that flows through the center of St Petersburg. Part of the museum complex St Isaac’s Cathedral, the church opens daily from 10.30am to 6pm (excluding Wesdnesday). Between April and September, the orthodox cathedral also opens from 6pm to 10.30pm. Other attractions part of the museum complex include the Smolny Cathedral, St Isaac’s Cathedral, and the Sampsonievsky Cathedral.
